Description

Passage of the Alpha Prompt III for Woad 30046 , featuring Necklace of Cans 12812  and Caelan 28445  for story purposes.
I'm super happy with this in comparison to the last two! I just forgot Noc's white face marking, oops. Toko dads are best dads.

9. Your tokota crosses paths with an infant or child (animal or human) that is too young to remember where it came from or who it's parents are. Your tokota must choose to either take mercy and care for and protect it until the parents can be located, or abandon it to nature.

  • Optional: +10 for somehow including a depiction of your tokota's soul animal, full body (50%) or worked into the scenery/theme - Raven (on Woad's back, a little hard to see)
  • Optional: +10 for correct setting - Aqtuquaq Forest
  • Optional: +10 for a short story of at least 500 words - 883 WC

He was still angry with Nagruk. The god tricked him-- or lied-- he figured. Gods were like that at times, Necklace of Cans had assured with a rumble of resentment in his voice. Was it really lying though, he wondered for the briefest of moments. After all, they had assumed Nagruk might offer what the sought, and the god seemed to have other plans. Riddles, without a doubt, but other plans nonetheless. Woad glanced at Necklace of Cans behind him as the pair picked their way upward into more and more snow on their ascent out of the Aqtuquaq Forest.

Necklace of Cans did not consider such things, Woad knew, and so he did not voice his thoughts. Silence hung between them, the only sound the steadily growing whistle of wind through the peaks as they approached.

"You will find what you need in the mountains... though it will not be what you seek."

The God of the Hunt's words echoed in his mind. Just what did that mean? They sought food and plentiful prey. It was clear to him that there would be no prey here, Woad thought wryly. Unless they acquired a sudden taste for snow and rocks... Besides, any prey that might even remotely be here was surely bedded down for the snowstorm that appeared to be brewing just to the east and quickly approaching. They would have to find shelter, he thought--

The sudden raucous caw of his raven brought Woad's attention further up the trail they were taking. At first he did not see it, for it blended in with the stones and snow, but the barest hint of red and the urgency in Necklace of Can's voice brought him to the realization of just what his raven had found.

"A pup?" Necklace of Cans trotted past Woad, his legs, lanky in comparison to Woad's stubby ones, taking him to the pile of fur much more quickly than Woad could travel. Woad saw him nose the little bundle, fearful that the hint of red might be blood and the pup might already be frozen.

The pup stirred suddenly, slowly, and Woad gasped. Necklace of Cans shot him a concerned look before turning back toward the pup. Though he was a massive Tokota in comparison to Woad, Necklace of Cans had always had a soft spot for young ones, human and Tokota alike. He wouldn't admit to liking nanny duty, but in that moment Woad was thankful for his friend's penchant for caring for pups. This one, it seemed, needed it desperately.

Woad approached, letting his breath fall on the huge pup. "Hello, little one. Can you hear me?"

The pup gave an ineffectual squeak, groggy and plaintive. "Ma?" Woad glanced at Necklace of Cans, and the pup repeated. "Mama, where?"

"I don't know,"Necklace of Cans rumbled, nudging the pup into standing. "But we are here to help. Can you walk?"

The pup's legs shuddered, frost clinging to every inch of him in patches. Necklace of Cans licked at it, brushing away the majority with his tongue as Woad looked skyward briefly. "Ma..." the pup repeated, sorrowfully. Necklace of Cans' brow furrowed.

"Noc?" Woad broke his concentration, eyes to the sky as his nose trembled. "I think we ought find shelter."

The barbary glanced skyward as flakes began to descend on the trio. Dark clouds churned overhead. He nodded as the shivering pup began to nose against his leg. "Come, both of you. We need to be quick."

With the help of Woad's raven, they quickly found shelter-- a rocky crevasse that led into a slightly larger cavern. After Woad confirmed the lack of any large predators-- namely bears and cougars, they entered the crevasse and bedded down for the storm.

"Woad..." Necklace of Cans spoke softly, not taking his eyes off the piebald pup snuggled between them comfortably. "I am concerned."

Necklace of Cans was often concerned, Woad mused to himself. "Go on, friend."

"This pup is large, much larger than most at his speech level."

Woad looked again at the pup, who was indeed quite large. He would have expected such a vocabulary from a pup half his size, barely weaned. "Do you think... his growth has been stunted?"

"I'm not certain," Necklace of Cans said. He had known children in their village to occasionally be stunted in that way, but they managed to do quite well in spite of their disabilities. There had been others that had suffered head injuries and not quite recovered. Perhaps the pup had suffered an injury in this manner... though the red Woad had seen before had been simple handpaints, not blood as he had initially feared. Save for the cold and perhaps hunger, the pup seemed fairly healthy. It was incredible luck despite the situation.

"I don't believe it's an issue, friend." Woad assured him.

"But if he cannot tell us where his family or handlers are..."

Woad sighed. He had not considered that. "Very well... I see your point." He gave a pause, wondering if this was what Nagurk had foretold. "We will simply have to find them."

With that, the pair spent the remainder of the storm safely tucked away, until they could traverse their way back down the mountain to find the pup's family.
