Description
New work. Rauisuchid Postosuchus kirkpatricki drags its next prey, allokotosaur Trilophosaurus buettneri. Postosuchus and other "rauisuchians" are some of my favorite Triassic creatures, so I'm glad I was lucky enough to draw it.
Postosuchus is known from many specimens, including fairly complete ones, so it is one of the most studied "rauisuchians". P. kirkpatricki is the type species described from a specimen with a well-preserved skull from Post Quarry (hence the name), Texas. Later, another specimen was found in good condition, and later new specimens were found from Ghost Ranch, new Mexico. In 1992, Postosuchus remains were discovered in North Carolina. In 2008, they were described as a new species, Postosuchus alisonae. Among other things, it is known from almost a complete forelimb, but the most interesting - the stomach contents, which consisted of several victims eaten.
Postosuchus grew up to 4-5 meters in length. The massive 55-centimetre skull narrowed to the tip of the snout. The jaws bore sharp teeth of various shapes, the front ones rounded in cross-section, and the larger ones flattened and serrated. The forelimbs were quite strong. The locomotion of Postosuchus was the subject of debate: whether it was bipedal or quadrupedal. At present, obligate bipedality has been proven - the front limbs were completely unsuited for carrying body weight. Like the rest of the "rauisuchia" Postosuchus had a double row of osteoderms, they were found in P. alisonae. Due to its size and strong jaws with fearsome teeth, Postosuchus was a top predator and was certainly a threat to many of its neighbors, including the dinosaur Coelophysis. Among the objects of hunting were relatively unwieldy Trilophosaurus. One of them became the victim of my Postosuchus.
This work was somewhat difficult in some aspects. I am not sure about the correct perspective of the head, and I am absolutely not used to drawing osteoderms. But I think it's still a useful experience.
