Description
At last! Spring flowers! This is a concept for a character in a personal comic project called Ms. Kleodaughter.Cold press paper, either baohong or strathmore.
Colors used were Pv15 pr209 and a pbk9 (my only smooth black). Dyadic harmony is made by picking two colors on a 12-color color wheel with two colors separating them. I used a mid to cool red and a blue violet (separated by red violet and violet). Black and white help create depth.
Dyadic harmony is popular in digitally manipulated art but I didn’t feel it would work in watercolor. I may try something like this again.
Pr209 has made me scratch my head a lot! It’s known as a quinacridone coral, scarlet, cherry red or as quinacridone red (competing for this name with a pv19 red which is only slightly warmer than rose). It has high mixing range compared to deeper reds, so it makes bright colors with colors far from it on the color wheel. I think it’s best graying complement is a pg36 phthalo green yellow shade, so it must be somewhere in between quinacridone rose and crimson in its hue (which is more or less what it does in mixing charts). (Note: it’s the sennelier version)
I have mixed feelings about it (no pun intended!) and have many terms of endearment for it including baby crimson and quinacridone jolly rancher red. It just looks like candy and can be a delicate pink. As for PV15, I love true blue violets and can’t understand why this color doesn’t have a smooth convenience mix in every brand. Every color in the 12 color wheel should have a non granulating option, right?
Going back to color theory, I had also never realized that dyadic harmony is really just half of a square tetrad harmony of four colors. That’s very cool. I guess the full tetrad here would have been PR209, PV15, PGYS, and a yellow orange - a great Spring palette. Pr209 ans pgys can be swapped for a crimson and pgbs and blue violet can be mixed with a warm blue and a cool red.
