Description

Here is my initial reaction to Mobile Frame 0; a full virtual team built on Studio.io in two weeks of researching, choosing, and making instructions for my own colour palette. This team is an example of everything you'll need to play against any number of players from 2 to 5 and to maximum capacity of the Battle format. Which means 3 stations (that can hold a flag, holographic / translucent in this case) and 8 mobile frame.

I also tried to limit my number of parts, hence a few less equipped units.

Why going to such a lenght? Well, I simply decided to sell the idea to friends... and since I don't own a single lego brick as of now, I'll be ordering custom MOCs, brick by brick, for the first time. For that I need a list, and the correct codes for each pieces.

And I'm fairly anxious about all the "unavailable colour alerts" that Sutdio gave me. As a beta version, it could be that some are still available, but if not...

I'll have to forget about my dream colour palette and begin again from scratch. [Sigh]

If you found this, it could mean that you already know what I'm talking about and what journey I might be taking.

But... You could also just have learned the name and be like myself a week ago, savagely foraging the net for inspiration.

If that is the case, then here what I can give you :

Studio :

Is a (currently?) free program (beta) to build virtual lego models, part lists, and then render them, and then even create your own instructions! Incredibly easy to use, though there is a learning curve to diminish the searching time for a specific part. A MFZ fan will probably very quickly need these : "Brick (mod - round)", "Tile (mod - round)", "plates (mod - round)", "dish", "mechanical", "tap", "pneumatic", and finally "technic" or "Minifig Utensil & Weapons". It doesn't look like much of a hint, but these are the searches you'll most often use if following canonical instructions, or officially distributed fan-made ones. Even unofficial stuff generally stick to these parts for scale and style...

All render used to build the above picture were obtained through this program.

Micro Construct Tactics Nova - Mobile Frame Zero: Rapid Attack

Is a tabletop wargame / miniature game given FREE as a PDF and designed for people that love wargaming, but don't necessarily have Games Workshop level of money, or the memory for something at least as complex as an RPG. It seems like a good option to present your kids to the hobby, and is pretty much scalable for your needs (table size, number of players, etc...)

But where I feel in love, is that this game lets you create your own mechs. The stat system is fairly simple. Each mech must have at most 4 systems. The little coloured squares and notes above are literally all I would need to play this team.

Each system must be easily identified and removable from the miniature during play. Double a system type and you might gain a bonus. Halve a system and you gain diversity to the cost of less dice to roll. And that's mostly it.

It also comes complete with its own sci-fi setting. A bit nebulous, but big enough and coherent enough to entice almost anyone. The "Ijad" you see noted on quadruped walkers is a reference to this game very own anarcho-parasitic aliens.

(There is also a not so free "RPG" out there, all I can say nicely is that it won't let you build a pilot that change your game. A bit more setting is nice, but you'd probably be better served by porting your own part of the MFZ galaxy to your system of choice.)

There are plans for a ship to ship add-on soon... Currently only the kickstarters have it.

This is a very nice and free resource to start you with the official and not so official instructions of known common units. The "Achetype" page can help you find how to call stuff (since you will have to build a part of your own technobabble). It is however not the only possibilities. The image above being proof of this.

A good place to buy bricks, or so they say :

If anyone knows better, or a place that lets you order custom colours of bricks, then DO NOT HESITATE to comment.
