Chapter 4 : Joining Bloodclan

Shadowpaw woke up. During night, snow had partly melted and drops dripped from trees.
Everywhere was quiet. Birds chirped and monsters roared on a distant thunderpath. Shadowpaw got up stretching and stepped out of the den. She looked around and sniffed the ground in case if Shadowclan warriors were trying to trace her. Shadowpaw knew that she was no more welcome to Shadowclan. Brokenstar had probably found out that she had escaped Shadowclan because Wolfpelt saw her crossing Shadowclan border. Shadowpaw shivered in fear when she thought about Wolfpelt and Brokenstar. She was sure that Wolfpelt would do her everything to find Shadowpaw and avenge her. " What will her revenge be like? What if she hurts my parents? ", Shadowpaw thought with concern. Wolfpelt would unlikely harm Shadowpaw's parents because they were both skilled fighters who wouldn't go down easily. Brokenstar would unlikely kill or banish them because they were very loyal and strong warriors.
But now she was free from Shadowclan and decided not to think about it right now. Shadowpaw always wanted her warrior name to be Shadowpool. She renamed herself Shadowpool even though she was no more a clan cat. Living as a rogue didn't really bother her because she has been a rogue for first six moons of her life. Shadowpool was hungry so she decided to go hunting.

After eating Shadowpool wandered to the Twolegplace. She padded along thunderpaths and climbed over fences. There was many colorful twoleg nests and fences surrounded them. Besides the twoleg nests were usually an area where twolegs grew many different plants. Those areas were called "gardens". Ground was wet from melted snow and clouds filled the sky. While walking at Twolegplace, stories about Bloodclan came back to Shadowpool's mind. She had heard about a group of rogues that lived at Twolegplace and called themselves Bloodclan. Bloodclan cats usually had collars studded with dog's and cat's teeth and their leader's name was Scourge. Bloodclan cats were told to be fierce and bloodthirsty cats who were always ready to fight. Shadowpool asked her mother what Bloodclan cats were like. Snowflake told her many interesting stories about them. She told that Bloodclan cats were fierce but not that bloodthirsty as Shadowpool was told. Their leader Scourge was cold and harsh cat but he often solved other cat's broblems and had a soft spot for kits. Shadowpool believed her mother rather than other Shadowclan warriors because she had lived in the Twolegplace and met some Bloodclan cat's before Shadowpool was born. She was curious about Bloodclan cats and hoped that someday she could see what Bloodclan was like by herself.

Shadowpool crawled under a high fence to a twoleg's garden. She climbed to a tree whose branches went over the fence. She laid on a branch and watched as birds fluttered over twoleg nests. Twolegs moved inside their nests and a dog barked somewhere. Shadowpool felt sleepy and decided to take a nap.

Shadowpool woke up quicly when she heard a loud crack. The tree branch where she sat broke and she fell to the small thunderpath besides the fence. Shadowpool stood on the thunderpath startled. When she looked around she saw a small, black tom with one white paw walking towards her. He had a purple collar with cat's and dog's tooth studded on it. Shadowpool realized that the cat was Scourge, Bloodclan's leader.

Scourge jumped on Shadowpool and pinned her to the ground. Scourge looked straight into her eyes and growled. "Who are you and what are you doing in Bloodclan territory! "
"I'm Shadowpool. I didn't know that I am in Bloodclan's territory. ", Shadowpool stammered nervously. Scourge stepped aside, allowing Shadowpool to get up. “ Shadowpool sounds just like a clan cat’s name,” Scourge hissed.
"I wasn't originally a clan cat! I was born as a rogue and lived for a short time in Shadowclan. After being in Shadowclan for a couple of months I ran away because living there was horrible," Shadowpool explained. "I was here looking for you so I could join Blood Clan."
Scourge's look turned from angry to surprised.
"Why should I let you join Blood Clan? You're a former clan cat. I can't trust you," Scourge said. "I am a skilled fighter, so I'd be a perfect warrior for Bloodclan. I promise that I will not betray your trust.", Shadowpool asked pleadingly.
"All right then. But if you betray Bloodclan, you won't get a second chance!", Scourge hissed.
"Follow me! We're going to Bloodclan camp now."

Shadowpool followed Scourge through the Twolegplace. The farther they went, the bigger and the closer at each other the twoleg nests were. Everywhere branched thunderpaths of various sizes where monsters constantly passed. Sometimes there were small green areas or even forest strips between the twoleg nests, which delighted Shadowpool. Eventually, they arrived to a dim alley surrounded by old wooden houses, full of boxes, monster tires, and other twoleg stuff. Cats emerged from the boxes and cavities, most of which had collars with dog and cat teeth. They watched curiously as Scourge and Shadowpool paddled through the alley towards the metal box where Scourge had his nest. " Who's that? " "Why is that in Scourge's alley?" "She smells like forest. Is she a clan cat?" "I've never seen her here before!" "Stay away! She wanted to join Blood Clan and I let her join," Scourge commanded and jumped on the roof of his nest with Shadowpool after him. “Bone, get all my warriors here.” Scourge mewed to a large, black-and-white tom. After Bone had gathered the members of Bloodclan to Scourge's alley, Scourge said: The cats of Bloodclan! I have accepted a new member to Bloodclan. She's a former clan cat, so I don’t trust her completely. Look after her and let me know if she betrays our trust. Is that clear? "
There was a murmur of approval from the crowd and they retreated to their own nests. Scourge took Shadowpool inside his den and explained to her the rules of Bloodclan. After that, Scourge let Shadowpool go.

It started hailing slowly as Shadowpool padded along the alleys. Soon she found a suitable nest for herself, which was on the edge of a green area just a block from Scourge's Alley. The nest found by Shadowpool was a hole in the rhizome of a huge berry bush. She laid down in her nest and watched the sleet.
“ Scourge is exactly like Snowflake had told me,” Shadowpool thought thoughtfully. "Judging by the rules of Blood clan, he's a harsh leader, maybe a bit too harsh. But at least he's better than Brokenstar. Scourge lets kits grow into adults, and doesn't force them to train hard."
Shadowpool was excited. In Bloodclan, she could become a true warrior as long as she followed it's rules. But if she became an elite warrior, she could live more freely than an ordinary warrior. Then, according to the rules, Shadowpool could live in the same nest as other cats. “ When I win Bloodclan’s trust in my side, I will make new friends and they may be able to help me if Wolfpelt tries to take revenge on me,” she thought hopefully and curled up for a nap.
