Description
You know what the hard part about Chinese Wrestling is (aside from being the only girl in class)? It's taught in Chinese =_=
My level of Chinese is good enough that I can shop, haggle, give directions, make small talk, and yell "FUCK YOUR FAMILY TO THE 18TH GENERATION!" to crazy cabbies who almost turn me into road kill.
However, it's not so good that I can understand when the teacher is trying to tell me that there's an opening I can take advantage of while I'm wrestling with a classmate. I had him in such a beautiful hold today that took him forever to get out of (to the point that we both just had to stop and rest in that position since we were both getting fatigued), but I couldn't follow through. So in the end, classmate followed teacher's instructions and tossed me and won T_T
By the way, my teacher also decided that "Yapi" is not a good name, so I have now been renamed to "Xiao Ya".

Nope. I'm Filipino. I just work here as an art teacher in an American international school.

I know that, but I always saw contention between us and China, where the only compromise was how much money we pay them to make our stuff.lol

Haha yeah, and that's exactly why our school is needed. China does a lot of manufacturing and foreign companies (not just American) will keep using it as a resource. Our school caters to the children of foreigners who are here in China for business, not just Americans. Actually, at the moment we have more Koreans than Americans, haha. That'll change soon, though.

I dunno. They have a huge population that is an entire market in itself. But their import industry would probably suffer a bit. But they still have the rest of the world to do business with. I mean, in the city where I am we have a lot of European and Japanese companies too.

now that's interesting, looks like tensions with japan have cooled then(since the Sino Japanese war, opinions between the two weren't pretty at all)

Pretty much, although many Chinese people still have their opinions about the Japanese. There's still some racism going around that's still stemming from that war.

No, they don't. I think you're thinking of Taiwan. It's illegal to display the Taiwanese flag here, as well as maps that mark Taiwan as a separate country from China. In fact, the China Lonely Planet Guide is banned here because it mentions that they are separate countries.
The government also burned some text books from our school that mentioned that (plus some stuff about Chinese history that they didn't like).

Taiwan too, they got nukes with China's name on them should they pull a fast one...again.
burning books should be a crime, dont you hate it when nations do that?

yapi In reply to Realm-Of-The-Shadows [2010-02-22 15:12:17 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the book burning was a real shame. That was over $1000 worth of books. Plus, our head of school was required to attend this book burning and had to appear remorseful for being in possession of said books.
Oh by the way, I could actually get arrested and deported for what I just said about the whole Taiwan thing. Heh.

so China has a Nazi quality afterall, if they see a book as enough of a threat that they are compelled to burn it, then it is worth preserving!

Not just books, they ban movies, too. And websites! GAWD, there are so many websites you can't access here in China. Youtube, for one! WE CAN'T GET FREAKING YOUTUBE.
Well, I can, because I paid for a VPN. Heh. But yeah, if you don't have a proxy, your internet is gonna suck so bad.

Poor chibi Yapi...And your teacher renamed you? Why? Does the new name mean something special or is he just being weird? XD

Okay, so I got the characters translated and apparently, I've been writing my name as "Inferior Fart". HAH.

yapi In reply to KaijuDuke [2010-02-22 03:20:33 +0000 UTC]
I'll go with the name my wrestling teacher gave me, haha. So from now on, while in China, I am "Xiao Ya"!

yapi In reply to KaijuDuke [2010-02-21 14:58:02 +0000 UTC]
He said the "Yapi" doesn't sound good =_= Either that, or he meant that it translates to something bad in Chinese.. I think it's the latter XD I looked up the characters I use for "Yapi" and the first character means "inferior" and the second means "compare to". Haha, oh crap.
So now my new name "Xiao Ya" means "Little Asian".

NekoLLX In reply to yapi [2010-02-21 15:35:45 +0000 UTC]
yeah "compared to inferior" isn't a good name....
so what does your new name mean Xaio?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
yapi In reply to NekoLLX [2010-02-21 15:43:36 +0000 UTC]
Well, going by the characters he used, "Xiao" means "small" and "Ya" is Asia or Asian, so I guess now I'm "Small Asian".
Which I am... not. Maybe I should have asked him to call me "Pang Ya", which means "Fat Asian." Bwahaha XD

Check out this map: [link]
See where Korean and Japan are? Below that is Taiwan, and below Taiwan is the Philippines. So, yes, we're Asian. More specifically, Southeast Asian.
