Description Pleistocene, 30 000 years ago, North America

Standing over a rock, this Neogyps errans takes a small piece of meat out of a carcass where it can eat it safely. This bird is a large accipitriform from North America. In contrast to the more emblematic cathartiforms, Neogyps is believed to be an accipitriform vulture, something absent in modern day America, but assumed to have been a thing back in Pleistocene times. Their extinction seems to have been linked to the overall megafaunal declines that happened at the end of the epoch, but this species is a demonstration on how extraordinarily abundant birds like these, dedicated to feast on dead giant animals, were much more abundant back in the times of eccological prosperity.
