--------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the 9th and last picture on page 10 of my new comic under construction "The Queen of Nothing".
What happened so far:
Troubled and confused, Aleea, the Lahari, is in search for her mate Fanil.
The First Mate of the "Squall", a human transport ship, has told her that she can find him high up in the crow's nest. And despite her terrible fear of heights, she considers climbing up to him.
Anxiously Aleea looks up the rope ladder which seems to stretch endlessly into the nightsky. The first mate's laughter makes her shiver. He knows exactly how deeply rooted the fear of heights is in water creatures. She can feel how her stomach seems to slowly sink towards her knees. Her mind knows that her athletic body is strong enough for the climb, there's no doubt about that, but her palms suddenly are sweaty, and her fingers tremble.
At the beginning of the trip, when everthing was still fine, the First Mate and she talked about it often ... also laughed about her phobia, while Aleea used to play with Cookie without any worries or sorrows.
Now Cookie is dead. And the First Mate tries to use her fears against her.
Two-faced humans.
The Lahari cannot lie, and only few of them understand the concept of not being told the truth.
They are slow learners and they adapt slowly to new circumstances.
Maybe a reason why they soon will be extinct.
Aleea must be faster, braver, sharper than any Lahari has ever been before. She must overcome her fears, otherwise she will be of no help to her people.
Her inner voice (or voices?) speak(s) to her while she climbs up the ropeladder: "No fear."
"Be brave", the whispering continues as she climbs further up.
Her strength slowly falters as she she realizes that the one speaking to her in her head is not her own inner voice.
"Be stronger ...", one voice whispers, accompanied by the echoes of many other voices.
Current Picture:
"... than we have been." finishes another voice.
Aleea now knows that she is hearing the dead who are trying to manipulate her.
So many who lost their lives. So sad.
But was it really *her* decision to climb up? Why? What is she doing up here? Stupid!
Only because the dead wanted her to fight her fears.
No, it was NOT Aleea's decision, even if she was angry for a second with the First Mate. And now? She feels how she looses self-confidence and while she weeps for the souls of her people - and because of her own stupidity - the panic returns in full force.
Clinging to the rope ladder she struggles to breathe. Will she ever again be able to make her own decisions without being influenced by ... others, who propably have made super-bad decisions before they died? Who push her constantly to be ... someone else and are not interested in the fate of the other living beings around her?
