Cards like this were very popular during the early decades of the 20th century, especially with the generation that coming of age. Young people often sent cards to their friends and sweethearts away at school. The mail came twice daily in most U.S. cities and towns, so it was also possible to send a card out with the morning mail and get a reply back later that day.
Postcards were the social media of choice for many people a century ago.
Not everyone had a telephone yet, but everyone had a pen!
