Yep, they won't do a thing on maps that lack light_environment already.
But I still wouldn't recommend this method, because the background still destroys everything around the models. ( on normal maps, of course )

It definitely gives a darker and grittier feel to the environment, I get the feeling it should be used only in creepy sorta pics. It most definitely helps though.
