|| Protective|| Calm || Warm-hearted || Sensitive || Indecisive || Timid || Avoidant ||
Avalanche likes to spend time alone, tending to her herbs. However when she is confronted by social expectations she's surprisingly eloquent, collected, mature and not too proper, but still a little bit fuzzy about manners, more due to habit than actual conviction. She loves to reminisce about her childhood home and the Kirins she grew up with, however she does not speak much of her personal past; this is a recurring behavior of hers, as she prefers to not talk about herself. In this way she's selfless, and may be prone to feeding other ponies' egoes as she is much more of a listener than a speaker. Being a timidly adventurous spirit, she likes to do things one step at a time and tends to see the smaller details before the big picture. She's not good with schedules or big to-do lists and has great difficulty managing her own daily structure. She also does not do particularly well under pressure, and prefers to take things slow. She is rather forgetful, sometimes on the extreme end, she tends to miss meals and sometimes even forgets to sleep, meaning she is not seen much around town during the day at times. When she has these "nocturnal periods", she takes long walks most often in the middle of the night, gathering plants and herbs that only grow under the moon and enjoying the stillness of the dark. While she would never admit this (due to her branding it and by extension herself as "odd"), it is her favourite pastime.
She avoids showing extreme emotions in front of others, as she's incredibly fearful of shifting into her Nirik form, which also renders her quite docile. Often refusing to express detailed opinions and views, she tends to avoid conflict as much as possible, both to avoid the aforementioned shift and also due to a fear of hurting or upsetting others. While she may seem like a ball of anxiety or merely a coward to some, she, at the same time, has some confidence to her name and will willingly stand her ground against bullies, calmly and maturely. She has a way with people like she has a way with herbs, in the sense that most of what she says is hard to use against her because it is so meticulously thought out. This may lead to her being labeled as manipulative, but she does this to protect herself rather than out of a need to use others. She has spent years of her life preparing herself against bullies that never existed. This also gives her some trust issues; she handles them.. Well, somewhat. She lets people in on the surface, but deep down, she doesn't feel close to anyone, maybe not even her own family, which only fuels her rather melancholic and maybe even nihilistic view on life.
Backstory
You are so much more than your father's son.
Avalanche was born on a lovely spring day to parents Heathergale and Blooming Boulder, two years prior to her sister Earthquake. Her hamlet was an offshoot of the Kirin village seen in S8S23, formed by Kirins who left in protest due to the ordeal regarding the Stream of Silence. She developed a fondness for flowers and plants early in her childhood, and became an apprentice at the hamlet's herbalist during her preschool years. Growing up, Avalanche heard stories of the ponies who lived in the lands beyond the Great River, and was told that her grandfather was an Earth pony, a traveler from the other side of the River who romanced her grandmother, only to leave her unnoticed the night after. That was why Avalanche was bigger and braver than all the other Kirins, said her parents. But Avalanche did not want to be bigger, nor braver. She wanted to be just like everyone else, and while her hamlet was nothing but accepting of the foal, she always feared they would turn against her at any moment. Avalanche, having been assigned male at birth, did not feel she could be herself in her hamlet, and the only one who knew about her identity was her younger sister, Earthquake. The constant disregard towards her true self left Avalanche devastated, and she began to have bursts of anger, shifting in and out of her Nirik form unwillingly. Only her sister was able to comfort her in these times of trouble, due to the rest of her village not knowing her secret. After years of outbursts, the village elders felt they had no choice but to send her away; they had never been harsh to her, but at this point, they were desparate, as she was causing unrest throughout the entire hamlet.. The other Kirins were beginning to become afraid of her.
Her sister, having nudged her towards telling the others about her identity for years, told her that this was her last chance to redeem herself. The farewell ceremony was a joyless sight, her parents could barely look their daughter in the eyes. Avalanche felt she had no choice but to tell everyone.
She called out for their attention; not with a speech of bravery, but she did raise her voice.
In the hardest breath she had ever taken in her life, Avalanche spoke.
"I.."
"I am a woman."
She had never felt more vulnerable. Her family, her childhood friends, her elders.. Were silent. She couldn't do it, she was too much of a coward to stay. So she grabbed her bags and she ran, for her life, trying not to hear the exasperated yells of her sister in the distance. She crossed the Great River without second thought, just kept running until she reached a town with a name she did not know. She was exhausted when she finally managed to rent a room at an inn.
"Here ya go, sir." The innkeeper blurted as they passed over a key and were about to continue idly rubbing an empty glass with a napkin. This time, Avalanche stared intensely at the pony, a being she had never actually seen before.
"I-I..."
"Yeah?" The innkeeper droned impatiently.
"I am no sir."
"... Okay, miss? No need t'be uptight about it."
Avalanche stared at them in confusion for a solid few seconds, before quietly heading to her room.
Since then, Avalanche has settled in Applewood Grove. People seem quite impressed by her strange herbalism, which she has explained was just another branch of magic. She specializes in remedies, healing mixtures and transmutation potions, and soon manages to open a small shop right on the edge of town where the rocky path turns to woodland (think something like this for her home and store), where she thrives. Newcomers tend to think her burly appearance is a little odd, but they usually shrug it off as her just being a strong mare, which she is! She now spends her life in quiet but comfortable solitude, brewing potions, exploring the wilds and tending to her plant friends. She has thought of her tribe, but she still remains fearful of what will happen if she ever returns.
You are so much more than the wars you've won.
