TRA-LA-LAAAAAAAAA!!!!!
Hello, everybody! I’m back! When I was a kid, I freaking LOVED Captain Underpants! I used to read the books all the time growing up, and I always thought they were brilliant and hilarious. The stories are about these two prankster kids, George and Harold, as they hypnotize their mean principal into thinking he’s a superhero they created, The Amazing Captain Underpants! But unfortunately, they get into a few situations, and they have to keep their principal safe while also trying to stop evil in their town. And looking back at the books years later, they actually hold up pretty well (Though I would recommend stopping after Revenge of the Ridiculous Robo-Boogers, after that book, the series gets incredibly hard to follow). When I heard there was a movie being made based on Dav Pilkey’s series, I was very excited to see where it was going! So, did this movie do Truth, Justice and all that is Pre-Shrunk and Cottony to the book? Let’s find out!
The Imagery:
I’ll admit, when I heard DreamWorks was making the movie, I was a little concerned also. I was wondering how they were going to capture the look and art style of the book to CGI, it was like when I first heard Blue Sky Studios was going to make The Peanuts Movie. But much like The Peanuts Movie, it totally surprised me in the best way possible. Not only does it capture the look and feel of the books, but the character animation is some of DreamWorks’ best. There is a lot of fast-paced animation in the slapstick and the speed of it looks fantastic. What else can I except it looks great! 5/5, Amazing
The Writing:
Much like the book, George and Harold hypnotize their nasty principal, Mr. Krupp into the superhero they created, Captain Underpants! But the trouble he gets into is too much for the boys to handle so they go after him to make sure he doesn’t get himself hurt. While that’s going on, the new science teacher, Professor Poopypants, is sick of everybody laughing at his name so he wants to create a machine that will eliminate all laughter from the world. The movie takes influence from the first book, as well as the second and fourth books. But the way it’s handled makes it stand out on it’s own, especially with a drama subplot with George and Harold trying to stop Mr. Krupp from putting them in separate classes, and giving Mr. Krupp some sympathy with him being lonely. That and it has a lot of smart and witty humor, almost like something you’d hear from The Lego Movie. And there’s also some great nods to the whole book series, people who grew up with the books like I did will get a huge nostalgia vibe from them. 5/5, Amazing
The Cast:
For our cast of characters, we first have George Beard and Harold Hutchins. They’re two prank-loving kids who also like writing comic books, but at the same time, they are very neurotic whenever it comes to being getting caught in trouble or dealing with keeping their principal safe from harm. These characteristics make George and Harold interesting characters, as they represent both the fun and downsides of being a little kid. And I really buy the chemistry between them, as they don’t want to be split up. Mr. Krupp is of course the mean and nasty principal who hates the idea of fun, but the movie does give us a sympathetic history of him, where you do end up feeling bad for him. His alter-ego, Captain Underpants is also really funny and enjoyable, being brave and heroic, but having a naive side which makes him fun to watch. Then there’s the villains, Melvin Sneedly and Professor Poopypants, they both fit their roles as the tattle-tale know-it-all and the insane mad scientist very well. In fact, all the voice actors are very good in their roles. Kevin Hart and Thomas Middleditch really bring a lot of fun and energy to George and Harold. The only one I might have an issue with is Ed Helms. Though that’s a personal issue for me. From someone who always like to imagine how the characters would sound when reading the books, it can be a little distracting how the main character sounds different then you’d imagine. But I’m not saying Helms’ performance was bad by any means, it’s just not how I’d imagine he’d sound. But he still does a great job portraying the anger and silliness with Mr. Krupp and Captain Underpants, so it doesn’t bother me that much as it used to. 5/5, Amazing
Final Rating:
This is probably the best animated film I’ve seen this year, so far! Not only is this a great adaptation of the books, but it has great, fast-paced animation, hilarious writing and memorable characters. Even if you’re not a fan of the books, I still say check it out! You won’t regret it! 5/5,Amazing

For what's clearly the first installment of a planned series, this film was everything we could've hoped for and then some. It especially helps that Dav Pilky, the original author of the books, was involved with the movie and gave his creative approval for it. That's a sense of true dedication.
