Should have gone PC, then. During the time when the PS2 was big the PC had tons of online multiplayer games (I spent countless hours on UT99). Since VoIP programs weren't big yet, it wouldn't be too hard to construct a "male persona" for people to interact with online.
Heck, even after VoIP became popular there were all kinds of voice modulator programs to mask your voice.
