The battle raged all around her. Bullets, from both friend and foe, wore her name and streaked past her frame. Shells exploded mushrooms of dirt and cratered no-man’s land.
The rusted wire proved hard to cut, but even harder was moving it aside without the enemy taking notice so she could pass without slicing herself open.
Everything must have once been a beautiful green plain or a field of gold. But all that remains now is scarred earth tied together by wiry sinews.

However, she wasn’t here to sightsee; all that matters now is her duty. A man lay groaning in a nearby crater, half-buried in mud and bleeding profusely from a gash in his head. His empty canteen was pointed toward a pool of filthy water at the bottom of the hole.
