Imagine being told to help those who commit genocide. Hating it so much you decide to run away to farthest direction you could in the opposite direction. Only God doesn't want to let you go on a little Tarshish vacation and next thing you know, you volunteer to be tossed in the sea to appease God's wrath because everyone's in fear from a great storm. I wonder if even then Jonah hoped he would die, so those in Niniveh wouldn't get to hear the warning from him at least. Only God said nope this storm ain't killing you yet and next thing you know you're stuck in aquatic creature while outside the storm calmed immediately.
