I've been posting some video tutorials to teach aspiring artists my drawing techniques, but I think it's very important to learn from my mistakes as well.
I'm 25 right now, and I've been drawing all my life. I started drawing a lot more and professionally when I was about 19-20. I drew all the time and didn't think much about it. I would draw until I'm in pain, from sitting too long, from not eating because I was in the flow and didn't want to stop. I would get terrible backΒ pains and even heart palpitations from sitting in the same position drawing for so long.
That's when the nails on my right hand started to get weird and lumpy. At first I thought it was a dietary thing, so I took vitamins, went to the doctors, exercised, changed things up but it was too late. It's been years now and 3 doctors later they couldn't fix it.
If it were just ugly nails, I wouldn't really care, but the nails are just the tip of how bad I've been treating my body. One time during a particularly hardcore drawing marathon, my right hand swelled up for a week. Nowadays I try to take it easy and take long breaks in between but the damage that has already been done can't be undone. I can only draw for so many hours in a day before I have to stop or I will get pains from my entire hand, arm, and shoulder.
Now I have a standing desk, ergonomic mouse, hand brace, and all that. I wish I had done these things sooner so I can keep drawing without restraint. I used to update my comics more frequently, but I can't realistically sustain that speed without hurting myself. (Hence I plan on doing a Patreon in the future so I can hire helpers to do some of the comic's background drawings)
In those speed paint tutorials where I paint within 1-2 hours, it may seem like I have it made, dishing out art in hours, but after those hours I have to massage my hand and arm. I can't draw for more than a few hours a day now without hurting.
When I was in college all I could think about is how to improve my skills, practice endlessly, and all that hard work has paid off in some ways but not in others. So please take care of your hands, and your general health. It seems obvious in retrospect but I never thought about it when I was younger that, hey maybe, just maybe, if you overwork and break your body, you won't be able to draw and create all you want anymore.
Take breaks, don't grip too hard, do hand exercises, do general exercises, get ergonomic mouse and a standing desk if you can (I just piled a bunch of books on my regular desk until it was tall enough) These are some of the few ways you can help your hand last in the long run

Ouch! Man, it's good to see someone come out against the 'practise every day if you want to be worth anything' crap.Β
Take care of yourself man, and be wary of standing desks - you can still end up in terrible postures when you use one and you still need to stretch frequently.

Oh wow.Β I'm really sorry you have to go through that, I can only imagine.Β Β Thank you so much for sharing this though.Β We artists tend to get carried away and absorbed in our art a lot (and I'm completely guilty of the not eating thing.Β xnx )Β but crippling my ability to draw has always been one of my biggest fears, so I'll definitely keep this in mind, and I'm sureΒ tons other artists who read this will too.Β So in short I think you just saved a lot of hands.Β Β

I agree, my finger started to curve in ways your fingers should not curve because I drew so much at one point. I don't know how it went back to normal. I didn't draw or a looong while once I noticed that my finger wasn't healthy. I'm drawing a lot more now, so this just saved my hand. I could've had a permanently curvy finger if I hadn't have read this!

Β Any particular kind of hand brace that you would recommend? I've been drawing much more frequently and I already know I press too hard. I try not to, but I always end up back to gripping and pressing hard when I'm not actively thinking about it. A lot of the women in my family have arthritis and I'd like to do all I can to prevent it in myself. Any suggestions?

I got PSA (psoriasis artrit, I think it's the same you talk about). I got mine in my scalp when I was in fourth grade, passed down directly from my mother. It wasn't until I was in seventh/eight grade wierd things happened to my feet. Although nothing were to be seen they hurted alot like stepping on fire. The doctors treated me badly telling me that it was my imagination. Then last christmas, when I was in ninth grade I got my first relapse of psoriasis artrit and also my psoriasis spread all over my body (all from the ear canal to my legs). It was just a few weeks, and I didn't consider myself sick since before, and I got the inflammation all over my body (right cheek/also kinda my ear, my back, my right arm, my knees, my hips, my neck, my shoulders). It was really painful and my right arm stopped moving and was stuck. Today I'm fine tho I suffer some aftereffects and have gone through rehab to be able to walk again and be able to bend my arm. It was insane back then, I was only 15 but I couldn't get up from an chair or walk or eat or sleep or anything.Β
I learned the hard way of losing myself. I didn't consider myself sick since before. I used to have colds and fevers often but that I just thought was my immune system that wasn't that good but it was a lot worse than I thought. Now that I know I can look back further down my childhood and see signs that it wasn't alright but it wasn't something wierd.Β
The worst part is that this disease that we have isn't visible. People doubt when you take the elevator. I just want to turn and scream at them that I couldn't walk a couple a months ago and have to take celltoxics maybe for the rest of my life, but who am I going to prove? Next time they see someone they will think the same "laziness".Β
Now I just told everyone something kind of unrelated. But to summary everything tomorrow you can have lost everything, like me. Like I said I was pretty much unmoveable and I was only 15 (16 today). Age and where you are in life dosen't matter. You can get this when your 3 or when your 30 or 66, who knows. I had my mom which is the one who passed it down, but I know people who had no idea about this and my mom were the first in the family. Especially now in christmastime and all the other times, be grateful and remember that no one is the "unlucky" one, since you can't possible know if you also has it. Be grateful that you have your today, you only has this today once.

My ring finger started to bend and stuff because I had a problem with gripping the pencil too hard. I was really into drawing at that time too.
What's even worse is that my family has a history of arthritis. One of the worser kinds, but not super serious thank god!
I stopped drawing almost entirely until it went back to normal. I don't even know how it managed to straighten.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I tend to get cramps pretty quick when I draw due to the odd way I hold pencils and my tendency to grip way too tightly, so maybe I need to retrain my hand to make it easier on myself. I'm really sorry you had to go through this ordeal though. Maybe you'll be able to increase your writing endurance a little more with time and practice. Β

recommend: even if you dont have any issue with your hands from drawing, try doing some basic stretching of your had/arm muscles before you start, iv been doing this since one time i was drawing for ages without a break and by the end my hand was hurting so much and for a few days after i couldn't comfortably grip my pencil properly and i was shit scared i'd never be able to draw again. so yeah take breaks and stretch your hands.

I have a deformed nail from school. I'm left handed and i struggled with my hand writing. I hold a pencil strangely and thus i have a permanent dent in my nail and bone of one finger. It only hurts when i write for long periods of time.
Though, i understand this because I play video games, draw, mold, and knit.. my fingers get angry at me.

same for me, although you can't really notice it after putting nail polish on, but then again >.<
Did an x-ray on my ring finger to see whether or not I had shattered something after a biking accident, and the bone was deformed slightly due to the fact that I rest my pencil on there, the nail can be bent back to a normal shape usually, though...

I don't have a standing desk so if my butt hurts or if I can think of anything I just stand up and run around my room or just dance. It sounds weird but it really helps my ideas flowing. The tuning also helps me keep in shape. I try to stay away from sugar drinks and just drink water. Also always keep a healthy quick snack near incase you get hungry.

Posing a question to anyone who uses a hand/wrist brace:
What brand/type do you use?
I've been looking into getting one and not sure what's best for drawing/computer usage. There's way fewer threads on the internet about this topic than I'd like to see.

Did no doctor tell you that you more than likely have a pretty sever deficiency in either folate or vitamin d or maybe even a lack of collagen? Some deformities over years do happen, but it is more so in the bone structure of the hand and in the form of tendinitis. I have never seen this happen to nails before. I think you need a full vitamin and mineral panel lady.Β

deppfan85 In reply to LupusSpirit [2015-12-18 01:24:10 +0000 UTC]
This! Those nails are NOT deformed from drawing. That's just not how they'd look. My right middle finger has a weird nail from the pressure I put on it while writing and drawing as a kid, but it's an even spot along the whole nail. It's an added ridge of sorts. But these nails are definitely some sort of nutrient deficiency. They're lumpy, and happening to nails that wouldn't be affected by drawing.
