The path less traveled is the one we create for ourselves. As artists, we’re often told to get a “real” job instead of following our own path. But it doesn’t have to be that way, we can create our own path, we can choose to take the path less traveled.

People who say "Don't try to be special because you will probably fail" apply that lesson to their own lives too. It's not about the other person they are advising. It's about their own self-confidence. They have likely tried to be something and failed, and eventually they gave up on their own dream. It hurts them, and they are trying to spare you pain by telling you to give up sooner and not waste so much time. When you get that sort of advice, have compassion for the person and understand they were once you.
But definitely don't listen to them.

Every year
Several thousand people give up on their dreams of being artists
because of what others say to them.
It could be from friends,
bullies,
teacher,
heck, even their parents.
They all have dreams
that were crushed by people they trusted,
or those constantly looming over them.
But,
They just don't understand.
Artists are the reasons that we have
Homes
Buildings
Masterpieces worth millions
Furniture
And so much more.
Those who do not see it are blind and deaf
to every miracle that artists have made.
Just because you have been pushed down,
doesn't mean you should stay there.
Even is you were nailed there,
covered in glue and duct tape
with weights tied to your limbs.
You can be strong.
You can cut yourself free from all the criticism, and get up.
You can keep going.
And maybe,
just maybe,
even if everything seems out of reach,
you can make it.
After all,
You are still taking a path.
Just a path less traveled.

I LOVE this! It is such a great depiction of outcasts and misfits like us painting our worlds in stark contrast to the dull and lifeless monotony of typical societal expectations. Some of us dreamers just don't want to give up all our vibrant colors and let our lives fade away into the ordinary. I love this so much!
In fact I feel inspired - I think I will do a bit of periphrastic poetry in tribute to this image -
Call her discontented
Label her an unruly dissident
Dangerous and frightening
Someone who will not conform
Or let the cold monotony
Of your herd mentality
Trample all her dreams
Shackle her freedoms
And bury all of life's beauty
Beneath cold, dead concrete
Your utopia is a graveyard
Built to anesthetize souls
But she won't sleep quietly
Your chains cannot hold her
She will not surrender
You cannot take her dreams
Or hide her in obscurity
Ignore her if you can
She stands out like a beacon
In the middle of the street
Coloring her world defiantly
Unashamed and unafraid
She paints all her world
Living glorious colors
The riotous and beautiful
Shades of pure individuality
With her heart laughing
An angel of freedom
