My last painting used a 3D background, in this drawing I wanted to show some shortcut techniques when painting backgrounds in 2D.

Wonderful piece. I love the concept, and especially the gradient of light through the leaves, how the brighter leaves are lower and forward, and darkening as you go higher and away from the source.
