Here is a list of all the tutorials that i used to learn from. As many of you already know, i am a self taught artist. But the name "self-taught" is a little misleading, since i wasn't quite alone, i referenced and learned from many tutorials. So i am a tutorial-taught artist
Though some are from other sources, most of them come from artists on deviantart. Some aren't even tutorials but images that by looking at them, i get a better understanding of something.
They have shaped who i am as an artist. You can probably see their influence on my art to this day.

So without further ado, here they are.

One of the first tutorials on colors i looked at, and one of the best
has some very good tutorials on colors as well aquasixio.deviantart.com/galle…
some examples:

People ask me how i got to draw good hands. And the truth is i tried following many tutorials but nothing stuck. I just couldn't comprehend hands. So what i did was keep drawings hands after photos and that worked, i eventually got better.
This is a website you can use. It has many many hand references, in great poses artists.pixelovely.com/
It also has feet, animals and figure drawing as well.
If you're the type that understands anatomy from tutorials good for you. I found it doesn't work for me. Not as good as i hoped, or as good as the other tutorials helped me comprehend folds for example. But combining tutorials with practicing from photos worked.

There are more tutorials but many artists have archived them so they're no longer available for view.
I actually saved many tutorials on my computer and have this huge library of them for easy access. I am an art hoarder ouo

So, a question for you.
What tutorial influenced you as an artist? Links please!

I learned most of my foundation stuff in the era before online tutorials, and I only ever found limited use from the "how to draw" books I got over the years. However, I do still get new ideas for things to try or Photoshop/Manga Studio tools from Lar deSouza: www.ustream.tv/channel/lartist…

Then where did you learn from? If from an art school, then god for you, but most don't have access to art courses and classes.

From observation! A lot of parents don't encourage their kids to keep going back to the drawing table and keep working harder, to keep drawing more, or to look harder at the things around them, because they believe children are only capable of scribbles. My parents did just the opposite, not just with drawing but with everything - they always kept encouraging me to do more and work harder. I had the typical public school art classes, but most of them couldn't afford anything but cheap art supplies and trying to get all of us to draw the same thing with them. My parents also couldn't afford much, but that's how I learned to do more with what I had and discover all the possibilities of a medium; Crayola crayons are capable of producing some absolutely fantastic works if you learn how to use them to their fullest.

I also gained a lot from experimenting and applying things from my other public school classes (history, math, English, etc) to my art. It was actually a math class, not an art class, that taught me the "grid method" of enlarging images, and I sometimes watched Bob Ross on PBS, because PBS was one of the few channels my mom let me watch. (NOVA and Sesame Street were also on PBS, and both of them sometimes had segments about art on them.) I didn't actually understand Bob Ross's methods until I was in college, but his attitude of "you can paint anything you want, mistakes don't have to be wrong or bad" helped free me from the idea of being absolutely perfect in every line I put down.

I did end up going to college for art, but mostly because it was a field I was already confident in and wasn't worried about the material being too difficult. I was still able to work hard and push myself during college, but again, it was mostly because I had professors who'd look at my work and say, "Yes, that's good, but what more can you do with it? What would you do differently next time? Are there things that can be improved upon in this work?" I basically never received a failing grade or harsh criticism, but I also was always given the truth about my work, and I was never allowed to just 'slide' because I managed to do something and turn it in on time.

I know it sometimes bothers other artists when they ask for tips or tricks to do something, and I just reply with, "Find a reference," or "keep practicing with it," but those two things are really a big part of success. I don't remember never having a pencil or crayon in my hand each day; my mom still has my first drawing in her safe-box from when I was 18 months old. I'm 35 and a half years old now, so that equals 34 years, or 12,410 days of practice.  Some of it was half-assed, some of it was hardcore, some of it was being sloppy, some of it was being a perfectionist, but it all adds up after a while.

My challenge now is finding what makes me different from others. While there's no true 'originality' in the strictest sense of the word, I also don't want to be indistinguishable from any other given artist. That's part of the reason I gave up photorealism - there are tons and tons of artists who do that now, especially with increasingly powerful processors and tools to run Photoshop, and a great many of them look the same after a while. I started following Lar deSouza's work because I really admire what he does with cartoons; he's also very good at "realistic" work, but his specialty these days is cartoons, comics and caricature, and I love what he does with them. However, I don't want to strictly copy him. I want to be able to say, "Lar inspired me" rather than have viewers come to me and say, "Your work looks just like Lar's!" (This is also why, while I understand and appreciate the effort it takes to make an exact replica of art from an anime, say Naruto or DBZ, I don't give it a lot of attention when I'm looking for artists to follow. I vastly prefer fanartists who've gone forward beyond that and are doing fanart in their own fashion.) One thing that college taught me that life did not is that self-expression cannot and should not rely on what others prefer. Consumer art pushes everyone toward a specific standard; that's why my daughters' Disney books credit "Disney artists" as the illustrators instead of individual names - they are all drawing to the same standards by the same formula for the same commercial entity. I grew up being flooded with the message "Your art needs to look like X in order to sell" or "You'll never be able to sell that kind of art." In college I learned to create art for myself, and think of sales afterward.  Since I spent most of my formative years trying to please others, I also didn't have a lot of self-identity or self-worth outside my grades or praise.  I'm late to the self-identity game as a result, so that's where I've been pushing myself since college.

Well, I've taken a look at several tutorials but just can't seem to comprehend them. I understand what they're saying though and I do like seeing them. What I like to do is refer to books and other such images. I still suck at artwork but it's okay because I like to draw anyway. Oh, I like to think I learn from your artwork and other great artists too just by looking at them.
Anyway, Thank You for sharing these tutorials and giving such good advice. I will probably come back to this journal several times. :3

Yuuza In reply to CheesyMouse [2015-07-28 11:58:23 +0000 UTC]

I learned a lot by just looking at art too. But i can't feature those as tutorials, and every artist is different, what clicks for me, doesn't for someone else. Tutorials on the other hand are easy step by steps to follow and learn how to draw something.
I have looked at many art books, but didn't find them to help me much. Tutorials are so short and to the point, i don't have to read 10.000 words to learn something, i need to take 5 minutes of my time and follow some easy steps, and less than 1000 words of reading. IN books, there's to much talk and to little do. SO i prefer tutorials 10 times better than books when it comes to learning art ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CheesyMouse In reply to Yuuza [2015-07-28 21:17:04 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, I mostly look at the pictures in any of the books I look at for drawing because chances are- I already know what is being said. I use such books as a quick reference whether it be for a twist of the body or tilt of a head. The pictures themselves are to the point.

It's true everybody learns differently. I'm glad you shared some of the ways you learned how to do such lovely artwork because others can benefit from the knowledge.

Oh and Thank You for the reply, it made me really happy. :3
