FIRST

Delta 0-2-3-1 found herself staring at a light on the the blue roof of the prefab Medical building. She blinked as the robotic medical helper raced on a track from one side of the room to another. The she turned to see that many of the beds had wounded Leegons on them as well. Her neighbor on her left was missing her right arm. She looked past the poor unconscious creature to the window. It was dark outside. It must be night already. She slowly sat up, a sore dull pain in her side begged her to stop. She looked and saw some stitches where the shrapnel had been. She found paper bandages were all she wore now. Her uniform was damaged, so it was probably already sent to be recycled.

As Delta 0-2-3-1 got up, the medic attending the wounded noticed her. “Please stay reclined. I’ll be with you in a moment.” The medic went back to helping another soldier with severe lacerations.

Delta 0-2-3-1 ignored the command and stood up anyways. She had to know. She went from one bed to the next, checking the ID of the wounded. She recognized a couple of them from around the base, but she didn’t find any of her squad among them. “Is this all the wounded, Medic?” she asked.

The medic looked at her in annoyance. “Must be an officer” she thought to herself. “Yes sir. The assault around the hill was fairly light. The main push was led by the Red’s Assault Troopers. That poor squad defending that side of the hill was completely wiped out. If reinforcements hadn’t arrived we’d all be dead right now.”

The Sargent felt her heart sink. She placed a hand on a nearby bed to steady herself. “Perhaps the Medic was mistaken. After all, I'm still alive.” She hoped to herself. She started to head for the exit.

The medic looked in concern, “I must advise you to stay until you are more recovered.”

The Sargent didn’t bother looking back, “I’ve taken your advice under consideration.” she answered as she continued out the door. The cold night air hit her as her thin paper bandages did nothing to protect her. She headed toward her squad barracks, at least there she could find a replacement outfit and see if anyone had made it back.
