Next, let's say
Running face first into the wall of your own limitations for the first time... it's tough.
Sans is just never going to be a great healer - he may have the love and sympathy to fuel it, but the magic holding him together (his HP) is just too weak for him to be truly effective. Even trying his hardest, his tiny green aura has nothing on the huge lightburst Papyrus called up when he first learned how to heal . But hey, it's better than nothing, right? Later Sans tried not to let it bother him , even if it was just so Papyrus wouldn't get wound up about Sans getting wound up about it.
It's entirely possible and in fact fairly probable that Gaster orchestrated this entire scenario to see if Sans could learn how to heal, and if so how well. After all, it'd be useful to him in the long run, particularly since he's losing the ability to heal himself. Either way it has nothing to do with the sassmouth from last time , haha. Gaster's not that petty.
Amazingly if you get told you're incredibly weak all the time, you're not super confident in your abilities when a situation like this comes up. Who would've thought! This is probably the first time Sans has ever sincerely tried at anything and subsequently learned how it feels when you really try and still fall short. AND THE MORAL IS: NEVER TRY.

well, in game, the only time sans loses his smirk is when you stick a knife between his ribs. and even then, it's only because the look of shock that you actually managed to get him replaces it. he goes right back to grinning as he bleeds out.

This is such a touching piece. The emotions are just so raw. The pain that Papyrus is in and the fear and disappointment that Sans experiences. Seeing Papyrus that hurt is really sad

I can understand how sans must feel, trying his best, as hard as he can, but can never reach normal levels or surpass his limits (physically or magical). wondering and/or fearing the thought that they can never meet the expectations of others or feel vulnerable with thoughts like "what if my brother gets into worse shape next time and I'm not strong enough to help him, is there nothing I can do?"
hating their limitations and themselves for not being good enough to do or help others like they want to
but some people forget (and I learned this long ago too) is that they can do more in other ways then just this one.
Sans is smart and observant. yes he isn't strong or naturally powerful, but he is cunning and see though people like a book. even when he was barely born he expects the cell for a way out, knows whats going on in his environment with caution, and can summon a Gaster baster.
and remember in the game (in genocide route) he can see right through the players bullshit and kick major butt at the end, never mind the extreme mental abuse after so many resets and even through ALL that he can STILL make puns and help the player out, even with the fear of potentially losing his friends.
I say, one victory in battle counts a long way through the great war ahead.
don't give up Sans and you're brother's right YOU. ARE. STRONG

Sans is naturally power in his fighting skills, just, not all of them.
And Gaster said that magic is a reflection of the monsters soul.
And Pap is a kinder monster, there fro his healing is nicer, and better.
Sans is tougher than Pap, that's why his fight magic is better.
