So does Gaster alter his appearance whenever he shows himself to someone, or is that just how people see him?

Back when I first started reading this, I was a bit confused by Gaster's appearance.
I didn't connect the idea that it's supposed to represent him being a "lost soul" like the other characters from the end of the Pacifist Run.
It's a clever idea...but, to me it didn't make much sense, especially when in the last comic, when it shows him cutting his hand, we can still see his face...
But I later figured out WHY Zarla did this; it's purely to protect the audience. I feel like Gaster has grown such a loyal fanbase that likes the idea of him being a "good-guy" that when Gaster is shown to do bad things, it's hard to accept that it's the same Gaster. So him having his face covered by the lost-soul glitch, makes it easier for us to disconnect this character FROM the Gaster we know and love.
Hell, when I really got into reading it, I actually forgot who its supposed to be.
I figured this out when I saw thebombdiggity666's Dadster version of Gaster fighting Zarla's HandplatesGaster.
It suddenly dawned on me that here we had a fight between two of the same character, but I clearly couldn't recognize one as the same as the other.

I actually can see them as the same, somehow. This actually was one of the first Gasters I met, but I really can see him doing this, and on another timeline, in a better situation, being so adorable. But I can understand, they act really differently. But have in mind he is doing this because of the barrier, and these bad things hes doing made him more distant from his friends, too.
Its a matter of point of view. For him, he NEEDS to do this. He hates himself for being so cruel, but he is, because its a necessity for him.
I really pity him. He could've been a great dad. :/

It occurs to me, if Gaster can only speak a language that most people don't understand, doesn't that mean Sans and Papyrus only knew that language when they first escaped? Poor kids, on top of all the emotional trauma and physical damage, now they can't even communicate with most people.

I did see one fan comic where someone speculated that Sans might have started to teach himself to read English by comparing the labels on food boxes to what he knew of Wingdings (like, say, noticing the double "o" in "cookie), so they might not have been COMPLETELY incapable of communication. But still, that's an extra layer of struggle and complication that they didn't need in their lives.

Yeah, I thought it was. Sans is easy to underestimate, but he's pretty resourceful. Just look at how he uses your reactions to Papyrus' puzzles to analyze whether or not you're a probable candidate for being the source of the time anomaly.

True! I've noticed his uncanny ability to sense it. With a mind like that, no doubt he was able to put together information from a young age. Including translation from Wing Dings to English. After all, they're really not that different.

Yeah, the fact that the grammatical rules and numbers of letters per word are identical helps. Differences in sentence structure are one of the more challenging aspects of learning a second language, or at least they have been for me in my casual and sporadic attempts to learn Japanese.
Out of all the monsters we've seen, Sans does seem to be the best at noticing details and drawing conclusions from them. Toriel might have been better at it than she is, if she weren't so quick to dismiss her own impressions and observations. ("Do you know something I do not? No... that is impossible.) I suspect that part of the reason why Sans introduces the protagonist to Papyrus is so that he can see whether they're implausibly good at puzzles - good enough to imply that they've already solved those puzzles in the past. And, of course, to make his bro happy.

Haha, thanks. I do tend to analyze the heck out of characters that fascinate me. And now that I'm doing a fancomic and fanfic that heavily feature Sans, I've had to pay even more attention to his nuances and thought process.
But I'm sure you have your own areas of skill and intelligence. Kind of like how Sans is highly observant and good at inductive reasoning, while Papyrus is good at magic control and emotional resilience.
