Description
A few people have asked about what Toriel and Gaster's relationship was like, so here are a few doodles along those lines, haha. She momed him, much like she moms everyone. They were actually pretty close! He didn't take it well when she left/disappeared.That sewing box showed up here if you recall, haha.
OH he's actually signing with his real hands for once here when he's rambling to Toriel about magic science, haha.

I really love Gaster as a character, as well as Toriel.
Despite Gaster's actions to the skelekids, I think at least a few people such as myself can agree that he has a big heart.

i love how toriel has this sense of a mom that no one else has. i feel that its probably because she lost her children, so its kinda the only thing she knows hw to do at this point. i like to think that shes so psychologically tormented that she sees everyone as a child, her brain unable to see them as anything else anymore...
but hay, thats just a theorie.

Ok hold the phone. *tosses receiver*
If they were this close, this means that there's some serious heartbreak potential in the Momplates and Mercyplates universes (doesn't matter that he stopped, she'd see through his shit excuse in a heartbeat).
This is adorable. I realize that this is sticking my feels in the wood chipper, but I kinda want to see how it went down when Toriel took them from Gaster. How did she even find them anyways? So many questions.

I legit thought he was Papyrus for a second in the one where he's all excited sharing his theories with Toriel. And I can't decide if it's more sweet or sad :< Innocent Gaster is so cuuuuute. And it could have stayed this way Or at least, it didn't have to get as bad as it did.
I love his outfits, though. Gray stripes and some kind of scarf or neckerchief, for DRAMATIC FLAIR. Such a huge dork. Like with Asgore, it's fun to see someone dwarfing him for once. He always looks so big and intimidating around the skelebros, then around the Dreemurr's he's just a tiny little thing.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I have to wonder however, how did the boys reach Toriel in Momplates? And what would she have to say to Gaster? She obviously keeps in touch with him after that event (mostly for an expert on the physiology of her new charges), but I'm so curious as to what she would do or say.

caitlin52 In reply to Idonian [2017-07-04 19:25:53 +0000 UTC]
I always wondered that too, though in my little momplates story I filled in the gap by saying Flowey did it, lol. Also my version she doesn't keep in touch, at least in the beginning. She's too angry and hurt and doesn't trust him enough. But after some time, I can see her trying to reach out. Not sure if I'll continue that one-shot, but to give you a DA exclusive: After she's had some time to cool off and formulate her thoughts, I think she'd try to reach out to him in a way she didn't try to reach out to Asgore. Seeing how loving Papyrus is, she'd begrudgingly give him ONE chance.
Though she would not hold back in first telling him exactly how horrible what he did was, and how things can never be the same between them (that is, her and Gaster). Because how could they? This would hurt her the same way what Asgore did hurt. The only difference is there are currently living children he can help with.

Awwww. These are so precious. But pretty sad too, when you consider what happens later…L
I always wondered if they had a mother-son relationship, and now I know it for a fact. Thanks for confirming it. X 3
I’m really curious, what happened in the sixth and seventh panels that made Gaster so upset?
Also, this is nit-picky, but how can you break someone’s heart if they don’t know what you did?
I know for a fact I’m not the only one who feels this way, but as easy as it might be to pin all the blame on Asgore for what happened to the six humans, I think Toriel actually deserves quite a bit of blame herself. Given her position, I find it hard to believe she couldn’t have done more to prevent the humans’ deaths. As the queen, she must have exercised some degree of political power herself. And come on, she’s Asgore’s wife. It’s evident he loved her a lot and likely valued her opinions and overall happiness enough that he would’ve been willing to listen to her, sooner or later. Considering both Asgore’s personality and how much Toriel meant to him, I’m sure she could’ve persuaded him to change his policies about humans, especially if he realized he’d risk losing her otherwise. Of all the things Toriel could’ve done to stop Asgore, was ditching her husband and her people really the best solution she could come up with? She pretty much ran away from the problem, literally.
That much being said, you had perfect timing in posting these drawings when you did, since I’ve been meaning to ask a question related to this topic: Did Toriel’s disappearance/absence help push Gaster to take on his project? In other words, is it possible he would’ve never started it if she’d stuck around?
Sorry for so many questions at once.

Haha well he metaphorically broke her heart, if she knew what he'd done she'd feel so betrayed! And he knows she'd feel that way too, even if he thinks she's pretty much dead at this point.
The goatparents both made some poor choices it's true, haha. But I don't really blame either of them for acting irrationally after such a terrible tragedy. I JUST LOVE BOTH OF THEM SO MUCH I DON'T WANT TO TAKE SIDES
I don't want to make it seem like it's Toriel's fault or anything that he made the choices that he did! No one is responsible for what he did but himself. But losing her did have an effect on him that contributed to his decision to take on the project eventually... presumably if she'd stuck around, she would have kept him from going down such a dark path, haha. She's more assertive than Asgore is after all, and more observant I think... she would've taken more proactive steps once he started spiraling than either Asgore or Alphys did, probably.

Yeah, she probably would've caught on to him pretty fast and intervened early on.
Sorry for being persistent, but I realize this question probably got lost among the other stuff in my first comment,
so just in case, I'll post it again:
What happened in the sixth and seventh panels here that made Gaster so upset (the drawings where Toriel's hugging him)?
Or was it just something random you drew with no particular backstory in mind?

zarla In reply to SageOfTheStars [2017-07-06 05:53:49 +0000 UTC]
Haha it was meant to just be a general kind of breakdown, nothing too specific. But it stems from his residual issues about the War mostly.

I think Toriel and Asgore (and Gaster) made the same mistake, which is that they assumed the course of action they took was the only one which would give them what they want. And to take on those burdens alone. The only difference is Toriel's choice didn't involve DIRECTLY hurting or killing anyone.
You're right, Toriel does have a lot more power than a "queen" typically seems to. At the end of the pacifist run, after she learns what Alphys did with the Amalgams, she fires Alphys as the Royal Scientist (as told by the bear outside Grillby's if you go talk to him after the Asriel fight). And it doesn't sound like she has this authority because Asgore is on some kind of probation, it sounds like she's always had that kind of authority.
So yeah, I also think it was a bit selfish and detrimental for Toriel to try and save the humans alone, rather than staying to take more direct action against Asgore. Just as it was detrimental for Alphys to take on the burden of the amalgams alone, and for Asgore to take on the burden of breaking the barrier alone. And for Gaster to take on his project alone.
You achieve the true pacifist ending basically by bringing everyone together and bringing their flaws and insecurities to light. You help them accept each other (and you) for who they are, in spite of their past and what they've done. They've all gotten bogged down in these immovable thought patterns, and you come in and force them to face themselves. And I think the same happens with Toriel in the end (she does take charge again, and does let Asgore trim the hedges outside the school at the very least, lol).

Heh, yeah, it seems everyone's made some mistake or other.
That's very true (what you say about the pacifist run).
I kind of wonder though why Toriel only rescues you from Asgore in a True Pacifist run. As long as you didn't kill her, I don't see
why she wouldn't also have second thoughts and go after you in a neutral run just as well. It's not like whether you're being pacifist
or neutral affects her mid-game, or that she knows what you've done.

caitlin52 In reply to SageOfTheStars [2017-07-04 19:28:06 +0000 UTC]
It might be because you're the LAST one and she knows it. So for her it's a last-ditch effort to save at least one child.
Though that is a good point about the neutral run thing. Perhaps if you've killed something she hears about it on the way in, and hesitates? Or Flowey stops her because not all of the criteria have been fulfilled? Not sure.

SageOfTheStars In reply to caitlin52 [2017-07-04 19:42:55 +0000 UTC]
I thought about that, but I know there's some ending where if you only kill Papyrus, Toriel is exiled and living back in the ruins and Sans moves in with her. In the voicemail he leaves you, he mentions that Toriel often thinks about you and would like to someday see you again, but he doesn't have the heart to tell her what you did (killed his brother). This seems to suggest that Toriel is unaware of what the player does after they leave the ruins and never learns of any killing they do.
