I wonder how this conversation would be if Gaster was fessing up AFTER the regular Handplates timeline. I would be interested in seeing how AsgoreΒ would deal with the conflicting emotions. On one hand, this is his old friend who was trying to help save everyone. One the other, he created and tortured children in a twisted experiment. How would he handle that?

Asgore doesn't have much moral ground to stand on in a situation like that. After all, he's had six children killed. At least one of them he killed personally. In comparison torturing two children is horrible, yes, but the distance between the two ethically is not that wide.

It does kind of depend on your viewpoint though. While Asgore did kill several children, he wouldn't prolong their deaths unnecessarily, and they wouldn't suffer all that long at his hands. Gaster on the other hand, dealt out a whole lot of physical and emotional abuse over long periods of time, and they suffered much more than the humans, even though they never died.
Though I suppose it comes down to a persons personal viewpoint of ethics, is it worse to put someone through endless abuse but let them live, or forcibly end their existence against their will?

I was less attempting to make any direct comparisons between the two actions in terms of moral repugnance and more trying to make the point that Asgore is not so above Gaster's actions as one might think. Were Asgore to pass judgement on Gaster for his crimes, it would lead one to question Asgore's own criminal behavior and what sort of judgement could be made of him.
