This is in the war with humans and monsters
Gaster lost his family to it, and that's what he's referring to.

Not badass, just, broken.
Like, poor kid just watched his family get slaughtered
Would you be feeling 'badass'? He's standing up because he feels he has nothing left to lose.

I'm sort of sad that sans and papyrus seem like they'll never actually learn about Gasters life or why he's doing anything... they're just gonna live their lives hating and forgetting.

I guess in a way this could also be symbolizing his last moments when Sans lunged at him?

WHYYYYYY every dramatic moment is diluted with a pinch of humor? you can keep your mind when you laugh, or when you cry, but not when you do it at the same time! X'''DD

What's the funny part? The fact that the human can't understand him?

But this is sad humour, somehow myrthless, definitely not uplifting. Not that I did not laugh a bit, just...

*hugs Gaster* Poor skelly. You have to pity him more than hate him now I think. T-T

Everyone's saying this means he participated in the war, but there's still no proof of that. He could easily have refused to fight and gotten the crap beat out of him anyway.

SlickClaw In reply to GaarasBloodRose [2017-09-28 09:27:55 +0000 UTC]
That's exactly what happened actually
he joined in, but refused to fight and blames himself for getting his family killed.

That's what I'm saying. He pretty much says as much when he's talking to Papyrus about that "hypothetical" skeleton in a war scenario.

Emotion is the universal language, and no dialect is clearer then pain and despair.

Hah! I was just considering a "Pre-Handplates" Gaster, and it appears the universe was just willing it to be so. Here's the little drabble that came from that imagining on my end:
Be Careful - Gaster - Handplates AU It's funny how quickly your life can change isn't it?
"Be careful!" she shouted.
Not funny in the comedic sense. More funny in the odd statistical anomaly that shows up time and time again on a study you've done so many times that you could probably do it in your sleep kind of way.
"Be careful!" she shouted.
She never shouted. It was one of the things I loved about her. Monsters as a whole were rather noisy and intrusive in their behaviors. This contributed to the fear humans had for monster-kind, or so I believed. She never shouted, and yet... on today, the most important day of our lives... she was going against her typical nature and shouting. At me no less.
"Be careful!" she shouted.
It wasn't as if I was unaware of the inherent dangers present in the core. This technology had been our life's work after all. From that moment... far too many years ago anymore... that we'd first stumbled into the theory of ThermoSoulmatic power...

I can only see two scenarios coming from this:
1. Asgore and Toriel are just in time to save Gaster from death.
2. This Human chooses to spare Gaster, which could be the 'start of darkness' for Gaster, and why he blames himself - not only did he not fight initially, he believed the Human's act of mercy translated to him not being worth killing.
3. The Anomaly saves Gaster from this Human (somehow), and the result may fix Gaster in a time-loop.

It's as if he is cursed individual, tragic flaw and all. Whatever happens, he picks the worst possible interpretation. Alphys cares a worries? Damn, I am a burden to her by causing her distress. Human did not kill me? Damn, I am so pathetic little worm. It is incredibly depressing. Like... How does he even still live by the time Sans gets murderous?

I'm probably the only one laughing from that description
the human would have this really confused look on their face, and thats how Gaster survived

He speaks in Wingdings, I think any voice can do. But I am not creator...

Technically he did not have to be one fighting. Just was there. Got caught up in it, got beaten.
