I think it's a sign of really good writing if you can make someone torn between hating and loving a character. Another idea is that it's just good writing of abuse; the cycle of abuse often makes someone fluctuate between loving and hating their abuser, between reminders that their abuser is a person too and reminders that they've done bad things to you. I think Handplates Gaster fits both of those descriptions.

Nah, it's because after Gaster falls in the Core, The skelebros don't remember him. Zarla calls that a Lost Soul. We can also see that in the end of the Pacifist route, during the fight when you need to make your friends remember you.
