After hearing from Papyrus what happened last time, Sans gathers up the energy for one last try. He asked him about whether or not he had a choice a long long time ago , and Gaster didn't answer. Now here we are!
A far cry from how debates with Sans used to go . I wonder if Gaster's going to make a decision soon.

Ah fuck me, I'm on Gasters' side. (I don't approve of human experiments and torture, don't get me wrong.) I don't know, seems like the less obvoius cage is actually the more restricting one here. Gasters' actions are all about the cosequences after all.

If Gaster was mad at Sans for saying this...I think he'd punished him...I guess, these words reached him (even it is a little tiny bit though) awesome as always

Let's keep in mind, Gaster is always very careful when punishing Sans. He uses Papyrus as the vehicle when disciplining either of them. If Sans does something, Papyrus is usually the one who faces punishment due to Sans being so frail and at risk of being killed accidentally if physically punished.

Gaster may have made bad choices, but for sure he is not weak. It's because he's strong he made the choices he made, and where he's not strong enough is for holding back his feelings, that' why he's doubting and being somehow shakened by childrens.
And in the end, what are the choices gaster is not strong enough to make that sans is referring to? Because we say oh yes he's right get roasted gaster bla bla bla... but i think sans is wrong when telling him he's weak

I think what sans is saying is that he knows that gaster could stop doing this at any moment. Stop all of the torture, everything, but gaster is afraid. Of what? We are not really sure. Possibly he is afraid of opening up or asgore finding out about them. We dont know.

On the one hand I don't want this to end. It's dark, impactful, can be funny at the strangest of times. And presents a true antagonist who isn't fully hero or villain. After all, the literal definition of antagonist is "one who initiates change."
On the other, we're inevitably building up to something that's clearly going to happen soon, and avoiding it just to keep the series going would be an disservice.
