Description
halloween, 2004after trick or treating through a light snowstorm, we stopped by the hotsprings next to a river so i could take some pics of wolf in his costume, with steam from the hot springs all around him for a "mist"ical look.
a few other people, all locals and friends, had done the same thing. not to take photos, but, well, when one lives where there are no 7-11's to hang out, one has to make do with the usual old hot springs next to the river, right?
one family was there with their boxer, who was running around, barking like crazy. the woman said, "oh, cheyanne's chasing a wild rabbit around. don't worry. she never catches them..." and at that moment, cheyanne caught one. i ran over to the dog and yelled, "DROP IT!" (not knowing if she was trained, or if she'd even respond to me). luckily, she dropped the young bunny and backed off. the rabbit was just laying there, in shock. so i picked her up and handed her to wolf. i took a picture, then ran to the car and got a towel to wrap around her.
my husband hates it when i bring injured animals home to try to rescue them, but i ignored him and rode home with her in my arms. she recovered after a few hours, but i was pretty sure she was a domestic rabbit that had been abandoned (or her parents had been - the woman with the dog said there was an entire family of these dark rabbits by the river, some of them bigger than mine, others tiny babies). anyway, i decided to keep her as a pet.
i made the pic bigger than usual so you can see (IN FULLVIEW) her fur is still slimey and dirty from being in the dog's mouth and dropped on the wet ground. as you can see, wolf was upset the dog had almost killed the bunny.

she lived under our porch for almost 2 years, and dug millions, well, maybe that's an exaggeration, but, maybe 5-10 deep holes under there. but she's disappeared - don't know if she's off to a more exciting life somewhere else or if something got her.

Yahoo! More pics from Zasu!! I was afraid that I had seen them all! Hopefully there are more to look at real soon!
This picture makes me sad, I can see Wolf being upset. And what a horrible thing to happen to teh rabbit. I hate it when people dissmiss their pets like that..."oh she never catches them..." That kind of thingking is what got me bit by a dog once. >
I'm glad you've got an addition to the family and the rabbit is in good hands! What did you name her/him?

as far as i know, she's fine. she lives under our backporch, where there is a hot water pipe that is continously warm, to keep her toasty, we feed her rabbit food and leftovers. we used to have our wolf husky ookami to protect her, but ook died last spring, so now fox and coyote come closer and closer to our house, so we're always a little worried about her. and i've actually run out and chased fox away, but so far, the bunny is ok

I love this photo. It really catches both Wolf's feelings and the Rabbit's.
I'm quite enjoying following the story of the bunny, too.
Glad it found a good place with you.

A wonderful pic and story. The picture is so expressive. It's very photojournalistic in nature, but the kind that makes the cover of the magazine, that wins awards. Very impressive.

This was such a nice thing to do. You are a very good person and I can see your Son Wolf is as caring as his Mom. That poor bunny! Wolf's expression is too priceless! He is very sensitive isn't he? So if that was last year, this bunny knows which side his bread is buttered! He is staying put under that porch! Lucky bunny, he is!

my husband swears there's a river otter that's living under the porch too... river otters will eat birds, supposedly, but apparently not bunnies
and, yes, wolf is a sensitive boy

Is there a river by you too? Boy that's nice if there is...
Forgot to mention, not only is Wolf sensitive...he is freaking adorable! What a face on him!

well, we have a creek directly (and i mean DIRECTLY) behind the house, which leads to a huge river a few hundred feet away. the creek helps feed the pond in front of the house.

That is even nicer! Can you stock the pond with fish? Wolf must have a lot of fun with the creek and pond!

the pond used to be stocked with trout (before we moved there), but no one maintains the pond now (it's not on our property, though my husband manages the property for the owners), and the pond opens up to a wetlands and then the river, at the "lower" end (opposite to where the creek feeds it). that gap would have to be filled in or grated, and it would be a never ending job. there ARE suckerfish and what are called "squawfish" (northern pikeminnows or something like that), which are both inedible. and leeches. lotsa leeches. i used to even have a pet leech in an aquarium, which was pretty cool. it ate fish food, though i kept trying to get my husband to stick his fingers in and let it feed, which, bizarrely, he refused to do. it lived a couple of years.

The eyes are definitely the windows to the soul. The expression in your sons eyes and the fear clearly seen in the rabbits eyes says it all.
