Personality: Mei Li is a quiet, solemn young girl. She is a girl of few words--she only says what she feels is necessary. That being said, it isn't wise to mistake her quietness for passiveness. Mei Li is a very passionate, goal oriented person and puts her heart into everything she does. It's all or nothing with her. She is also very stubborn, refusing to give up even when odds are against her. Naturally, her passion and stubbornness make her difficult to get along with and can make it seem as if she is indifferent towards others. This isn't the case, however. Though she is very selective, Mei Li is fiercely loyal to her friends and family and is willing to put her life on the line to defend them. Don't let her small size fool you either. Despite her small frame and young age, she has been trained in martial arts for many years. Though she requires many more years of training, Mei Li aspires to be the greatest warrior the Dai family has ever created.

History:
Mei Li is the only daughter of Long Bang Dai (a Throh) and Lihua Dai (a Pangoro). The Dai family has been rooted in the Fighting type clan (later to be joined into the kingdom known as Tides of Discipline) for many generations back, known throughout history as a family made up of powerful warriors trained in martial arts. Mei Li's father, Long Bang, was no exception. As a young man, he trained under his father, Jiwu, along with his brother Lin Bang. For many years, the Dai brothers trained under their father faithfully, developing their martial arts skills for the day that their clan would need them.

Sure enough, the day finally came when war called upon the Dai family, several years into the Great War. The fighting was brutal and gruelling, but rumors of the Dai brothers and their father spread across the Sinnoh region in hushed whispers. The Dai family fought with the Fighting type clan, and soon the kingdom known as the Tides of Discipline until rumors (and soon after, confirmation) of a treaty came about. Though the war raged on in other countries, things seemed relatively quiet in the Tides of Discipline. It was during this time that Long Bang and Lin Bang each found a wife to call their own and began to settle down after many harsh years of battling. A year after marrying, Mei Li was born.

Being a daughter of the Dai family came with many expectations, though they were considered far less cumbersome than those of the sons of the Dai family. Lin Bang, who had 2 sons, Wenxiong and Luoneng, and were raised closely alongside Mei Li, were both expected from a very young age to show athletic potential. Mei Li, on the other hand, was expected to be much like her mother--beautiful, graceful, and elegant.

However, as the three children grew up together, it became plainly obvious that Mei Li was not willing to follow in the footsteps of the Dai women. Mei Li desired to compete with her cousins in their feats of athleticism, but her parents discouraged her from playing with them in order to force her back on the path they had carved for her. Deviating from her usually respectful nature, Mei Li would often sneak past her parents and play with her cousins, who lived in the neighboring house. Though both boys never saw a problem with it, Mei Li was often chastised for her lack of respect. It wasn't until one day, when the boys were playing over at Mei Li's home, that her parents truly got to see why she had been so adamant about rebelling from their wishes. When Wenxiong ended up punching her arm a little harder than she liked, rather than crying as her parents had expected her to, Mei Li socked her cousin in the arm as hard as she could, resulting in a waterfall of tears from Wenxiong. Long Bang was shocked. Could it be that Lin Bang's children were not the only potential warriors among them?

Though Lihua tried to assure her husband that this wasn't the case, Mei Li took it upon herself to prove her parents wrong. As she and her cousins grew out of their toddler years, Mei Li's abilities became even more apparent. She was not only keeping up with her cousins athletically, but she was even beginning to outshine them in some ways. She was stronger than both brothers, and was even the first to discover her Spirit Pokémon, a spunky little Pancham named Po, who had been rustling around in the bamboo outside Mei Li's home and stumbled upon her and her cousins playing in the backyard. It soon became apparent to Long Bang that the kind of power Mei Li possessed could easily become destructive if she wasn't taught to control it. Though neither of her parents really approved, both agreed to allow Mei Li to train under her grandfather alongside her cousins once she was 8 years old.

Upon reaching her eighth birthday, Mei Li and her parents visited Jiwu Dai's home, where both Wenxiong and Luoneng were already training, to discuss the possibility of adding Mei Li to Jiwu's disciples. At first, Jiwu adamantly refused his son and daughter-in-law, arguing that a such a young girl should not travel down the path of a warrior. Knowing that his father would refuse him outright, Long Bang simply asked him to wait until the children, who had been playing during their meeting, to enter the room. After a few moments of sitting in uncomfortable silence, Luoneng dashed into the room, wailing to Jiwu that Mei Li had injured him. When the old man tried to brush off the boy's comment as nonsense, Long Bang asked him to roll up his sleeve and show him the injury in question. Underneath his long sleeved shirt was a dark blue and purple bruise in the shape of a small fist. While Lihua ushered the boy along to get ice for his bruise, Long Bang explained to his father how this was one of many incidents in which Mei Li's strength had injured the brothers and his concern as to what destructive potential it had if she could not learn to control it. Defeated, Jiwu begrudgingly agreed to accept Mei Li as a disciple.

The first year of training was very hard for Mei Li. While Wenxiong and Luoneng were expected to become warriors, and had a minimal amount of training from their father since they were able to walk on their own, Mei Li was starting out from square one. Her grandfather did not make things easy for her either. In fact, it was made clear to her that her training would be the same as her cousins' training. To say that she complained was an understatement. Though all the children complained of aching muscles when they settled into their beds at night and exhaustion from performing menial tasks for their grandfather, Mei Li wailed constantly that she was tired and wanted to relax. However, her complaining only earned her harsh punishments, such as carrying buckets full of water up the many steps of his home. For that first year, Mei Li was absolutely convinced her grandfather hated her and wanted her gone. However, when Mei Li told this to her parents, they tried to assure her that this was not the case. Rather, they told her, he was only pushing her so hard because he wanted to see her succeed. Long Bang especially encouraged her not to give up. He told her of the many times that his father had been equally, if not more harsh on him for the same reasons and of his fantastic battles both in and outside of the Great War. This sparked a fervent fire in Mei Li. She was determined to prove to her grandfather, to her cousins, to her parents, and to everyone else that she would be the greatest warrior that the Dai family had ever created.

The change in attitude was noticeable. Even Wenxiong and Luoneng, who were both maturing and becoming stronger, noticed that Mei Li had become especially focused on training. She no longer saw her grandfather as someone who wanted to get rid of her, but rather a teacher who desired nothing more than her success. She studied the way her grandfather spoke, his reactions to various things, and his attitude about life and began to emulate him in a way. She tried to become less of the whiny little girl she had been at the beginning of her training and more of a stoic and wise looking girl.

As the three children grew and trained together, Mei Li no longer had to act like a stoic and wise looking girl. Rather, she had become that way through her grandfather's discipline. In but a few short years, the three children had developed strength and wisdom far beyond their years. However, it was obvious to see that Mei Li had come out as the top of the three disciples. While the brothers matched each other in strength, Mei Li outmatched them both, and oftentimes overpowered them even in 2 on 1 sparring matches. Because of her dramatic improvement, Mei Li was the only one of the children that Jiwu taught dim mak--the Death Touch.

Unfortunately for the three children, their training came to a gradual halt as their grandfather began to have trouble getting out of sitting/laying positions. It was discovered later from a family doctor that he was beginning to develop arthritis and was told to relax for a while and take medicine to help with the pain. This left the three 14 year old adolescents unsure of how to continue their training without a master to train them. Wenxiong and Luoneng decided to return home, where their father would continue their training. However, Mei Li adamantly refused to leave her grandfather all alone. She pleaded to her parents to allow her to stay with him to keep him company. Though Lihua wanted her daughter to return home, Long Bang insisted that his father needed someone to stay with him and allowed his daughter to do so.

Mei Li now lives with her grandfather, acting as his caretaker. She runs errands for him both inside the Tides of Discipline and in the Neutral Grounds.

Other Information:
  • She is specifically trained in internal methods of kung fu, her specialty being the art of Henan Xin Yi Quan (her family's specialty), tai chi, and she has even been taught to do dim mak. She is only to use her training when a.) challenged or b.) in self defense.
  • She is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, though she has a very noticable Mandarin accent.
  • She is always chewing on a leaf of some sort, her favorite being spearmint leaves.
  • She is always suspicious of strangers. It takes her a moment to gauge who has bad intentions and who does not.
  • Though she disapproves of the fact that they chose to leave their grandfather in favor of continued training, Mei Li is still very close with Wenxiong and Luoneng.
  • The garment she wears is a modified qipao given to her by her mother. Her mother was concerned with people mistaking her daughter as a boy, as her kung fu attire is unisex and does not conform to her girlish figure. Though this did not bother Mei Li, she wears it anyway to appease her mother.
