Chapter 8 continued...
Pinstripe’s handily taking out four guards also met with skeptical whispers, much to his and the Potoroo’s annoyance.
“Perhaps they saw you coming behind him and panicked?” Faihzha suggested, looking the komodo up and down.
Joe shook his head. “While I could have frightened them, I know of only one way to dissspatch a victim. Pinstripe isss …. creative. Besidesss, my methodsss would have had us discovered rather quickly as my victimssss tend to die sssslowly when i am withwithout without my sssword.” There was an awkward pause after that Joe wasn’t sure how to break.
“Tell ‘em about the disguises next.” Pinstripe prompted loudly, startling him. He turned to see the Potoroo had relaxed fully, lying down with his head in his girlfriend’s lap, where she was feeding him grapes. Pinstripe plucked one and threw it at him. “I thought you looked real good in purple.” He grinned knowingly as Joe felt his own face heating up.
“That was a sssstupid idea.”
“Got it past the next batch of guards, didn’t it? And straight into the ladies quarters.”
“Wait now, you ran into more guards? And you fooled them with what you were wearing?” Faihzha looked skeptically at Pinstripe. They had all seen the dainty blue outfit on him. But now Joe could feel eyes going up and down his torso and he fought the urge to shiver. They were trying to imagine the same garb on him! He ground his teeth and growled.
Pinstripe did not let up. It seemed he was delighting in this little bit of payback from his earlier embarrassment. He pitched his voice loudly, though his eyes remained amusedly on Joe’s. “We couldn’t exactly find a good outfit for tall, dark and scaly here, so we improvised. A nice bit of artful drapery if I do say so myself. You played the shy quiet type. One a da guards was quite taken wit ya.”
Muffled laughter broke out around the circle.
Joe’s growl was rising, but to his consternation, no one seemed to be paying him any mind. “Tell me, how DID you do that falssse falssseto? If I didn’t know better, I’d sssswear you were a real woman.”
Pinstripe was unphased. “Imitated you, darlin’.” He looked up adoringly at his girlfriend. “Though I couldn’t match your songbird talent.”
“That I’d like to see.” She tapped him playfully on the nose.
He grinned cheesily at her. “Later maybe.”
“Don’t forget you slapped one.” Joe pointed out, still, for some reason he couldn’t precisely fathom, trying to get Pinstripe flustered.
Pinstripe merely waved him away. “Well I wasn’t about to let him make snide remarks about your weight. Dat’s just rude, right there.”
The laughter around the circle increased.
“And then you and your ssstupid ssssecret passsssage.”
“Oh yeah!” Pinstripe sat up a bit. “Da other guard, the one with the hots for you,” he winked at Joe to the audience’s amusement, “wanted to escort us, but of course we had no idea where da women’s quarters were. And he was kinda suspicous’ like, all ‘where do you think you’re goin?’” Pinstripe pitched his voice low and growly. “So I said ‘Oh yeah, I forget where da secret passage was on uh-- dis side ya know? Playin’ all it was our first time in the castle.”
“Which it wassss.”
“I figure it must be near where he stopped, so I started pawin’ at da wall, and sure enough one a da torches shifted and there it was!”
Faihza’s ears flattened backwards, a puzzled look springing to her face. “Wait - how did you know there was a secret passage?”
Joe and Pinstripe shared a look and replied at the same time, Pinstripe gleefully and Joe deadpan. “There’s always a secret passage!”
Faihzha groaned and held her head in her hands. Her sister sighed. “Five years I’ve been trying to raid that castle and in the span of a few hours, you break out nearly all the prisoners. It sounds unbelievable and yet, here you are.”
