technically this isn't a gif :V it's an .swf
.gif is an image format (graphics interchange format)
.swf is a flash/vector format (shock-wave flash)

There's many formats for animation. If you right click something (if it's possible) you can save the file and it'll tell you the file format.
Animated images can come in the form of .gifs and .png (a)'s. Animated .pngs need a plugin to be viewed though. Both of these are raster, meaning they have a defined size and number of pixels and will loop their animation continuously.
.swfs are a flash format, which relies on vector data (often expressed as an .svg). These can have audio as well. Like scalable vector graphics, they can be any dimension without any changes to the file size because they're not defined by pixels. Flash games are also in this format and they can interact with the viewer, though that doesn't mean they can't be simple loops like this.
Then there's movie formats that use raster images like gifs, but come as .mp4, .flv, .avi, .mov, etc. which can have an audio track paired with it like a flash file. This is what you'd see on Youtube.
