Description
Hooray! My first tutorial!Inspiration: I was looking to buy elf ears, saw the prices and Bam! Inspiration. In my first attempt I used aluminum foil, double stick tape, and plastic wrap. Later, as I got addicted to craft foam by making armor, I came to this method. I just had to make this tutorial for the good of my fellow deviants (and for fame and fortu...well, fame.)
But enough of my silliness, here's the link to my patterns: [link]
I hope this tutorial is helpful, and if you have any questions, just comment or note me.

Craft foam. If you look closely, you can see it on the second panel.

This is amazing! It's the first time I've seen a not-overly-complicated way to make elf ears.. ^.^
I was already thinking of a costume idea for next halloween, and I thought being Link would be pretty interesting but I had no idea how to do the ears.... so once I have money for the materials I'm definitely going to do this!
Thanks so much!

Um, well it really depends on what supplies you do and don't have. My family is craft-oriented, so we had everything on hand. The fun foam costs $1 for a sheet, super glue is about $3-$5, double stick tape is anywhere from $3-$10
So, the craft foam is cheap, but craft supplies can be pricey, if you don't have craft supplies, store-bought might be the way to go. (however, you might be able to use elmers glue and regular tape.)
If you want really cheap, you can crimp aluminum foil over your ear, and tape colored paper to it.)

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I needed a special set of elf ears that couldn't easily be found at a costume store and within a reasonable budget. Low and behold, I found this! It was just what I needed, and I got the right ear size from your templates. ^^

yes! this just saved me from having to buy a super expensive pair online (actually i'd have to buy 2 pairs. my brother is toon link & I'm tetra). I've always liked making my own cosplay items better than buying anyways!
ps: i like the idea of craft foam as armor as well. I might do that also!

That's a really awesome way to use craft foam. I might have to try it. But if you get tan colored foam, do you still have to color it?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Zeldaness In reply to mxgirl199 [2011-02-03 15:18:35 +0000 UTC]
The tan color of the craft foam is kind of a "one color fits all skin types," sort of thing. It's about the color of someone who is half black, and it lacks the yellow and red tints of most skin colors. So, you could go without coloring it, but it wouldn't look quite right.
Oh, and as far as using craft foam colors other than beige, craft foam doesn't re-color well if you get a brighter color than your final intended color. When I made armor, I used yellow craft foam (instead of beige), and even though I painted it with gold rub n' buff, I can still see traces of the bright yellow foam through the paint.
