Description
As Ran dashes through the streets of Margate, she taps a small command pad on her wrist. Instantly, her visor lights up with various maps and diagrams, as well as a vital monitor for her heart rate, blood pressure, and various other bits of information.“Aaron!” Ran shouts through her communicator. “Can you see anything from where you’re at?”
The dragon, perched atop a taller building with the twins at his side, peers through his brother’s rifle. “Negative…” He responds. “I don’t see—wait… Hang right and make yourself invisible.”
Ran quickly hangs a right and silently dives behind a stack of barrels. Seconds later, she peeks around the stack to see a beautiful gray dreamkeeper with sky blue stripes walk past in an elegant red dress. “Aaron…” she hisses. “The hell!?”
“Shh!” Aaron growls. “That’s Marzena… And her halo is active…”
Sure enough, Ran peeks out again to see the dreamkeeper’s neon green halo glowing faintly. “So what does that mean, Aaron?” Ran asks.
Aaron hesitates. The cat can hear him loading a round into the rifle chamber. “It means… You might want to turn around…”
Ran quickly does an about face to see Kiaran staring right at her. His eyes, normally filled with the spark of mischief, are a dull mirror of their normal teal shade.
Before she can react, Kiaran picks up the cat as if she were nothing and throws her across the street into a shop window. “Wahh!!”
Aaron quickly sights up his brother. “Sorry, Kiaran…” He begins to tense the trigger.
“NO!!” Klara shoves the dragon and his shot whizzes off into the dark sky. “DON’T HURT MR. KIARAN!!”
Aaron bares his teeth at the child. “YOU BLEW OUR COVER, YOU IDIOT!!”
Kiaran looks up and spots his brother and the two twins. He then looks at Marzena who casually turns to him and bats her eyelashes. “Kill them for mommy…”
Kiaran nods and spreads his wings. He leaps to take off for his new targets when suddenly.
“DON’T YOU HURT MY KIDS!!” A bolt of lightning suddenly sparks out of nowhere and sends the dragon crashing back into the ground. Ran climbs out of the store window and looks at Marzena. “YOU! I’M GONNA FUCKING PAINT THE CITY WITH YOUR BLOOD!!”
Marzena smiles and snaps her fingers. “Just try me… Who are you?”
Ran holds up her twin tommy springers and the pencils on the sides glow yellow. “Call me the Artist.” She opens fire and a volley of red hot iron flies towards the elegant dreamkeeper.
Suddenly, Marzena disappears into the ground and the bullets imbed themselves into a market cart nearby. “Whoops. Did your little pencils make a mistake? Oh well.”
Marzena suddenly oozes out of a nearby shadow, Kiaran carrying her in his arms. As he sets her down, Marzena points at Ran. “Kill the Artist wannabe, Kitterbug dear…”
Kiaran looks at Ran, and his halo glows brightly. Slowly, shadows ooze down his arms and he soon holds two shadow katana. Quick as a flash, he dashes straight for Ran, dodging each and every shot from her tommy guns. He closes in and tries to cleave downward with his left-hand sword.
“Gah!!” Ran quickly combat rolls backwards as Ki’s shadow-blade carves into the dirt as if it were butter. She recovers quickly and taps on her datapad. Her chestpiece glows and she grabs two grooves in the bottom. She yanks hard and the chestpiece responds by ejecting two golden knuckle bracers into Ran’s hands. The cat’s halo glows and the bracers start crackling with electricity. “Let’s dance, pretty boy.”
Kiaran lets his swords reform into two gauntlets and he and Ran quickly go at it hand to hand. Again, the dragon runs at Ran and tries the same move as before, a left cleave downward. Again, Ran dodges by combat rolling back. But this time, Kiaran whips around and connects his tailspikes with Ran’s shoulderguard.
“Gah!!” Ran is sent rolling to her left and she grabs her right shoulder. Her helmet display lights up red with warning lights. “DAMAGE TO RIGHT SHOULDER GUARD. DAMAGE TO RIGHT SHOULDER GUARD.” Blares the helmet warning system.
“Shut up!” Ran hisses at herself. She picks herself back up and returns to a fighting stance. She charges at the dragon this time and feints a right hook. Kiaran goes to block but Ran slides under his legs. She grabs Ki’s tail and stands back up. “Route all power to exosuit hydraulics.” She commands her helmet.
The armor responds and the gold lines on her outfit start glowing brighter. Ran grabs tighter on Kiaran’s tail and heaves upward. She pulls the dragon into an arc above her head and slams him down behind her. Without hesitating, she swings Kiaran around again and throws him into a wall nearby. Finally, she pulls hard and causes the dragon to fly straight toward her in his daze.
“Good night, baby…” Ran thinks to herself. She winds up and commands her suit to reroute all the power to her right arm. She then throws a massive downward right hook into Kiaran’s head and sends the dragon face-first into the ground.
Ran quickly turns to look for Marzena. “Marzena!!” She shouts.
No answer. Ran turns around to look for her but to no avail. “Where the hell—” She suddenly feels a hand wrap around her ankle. She looks down to see Kiaran getting back up. His eyes now turning deep pink as shadows start to cover his entire body. His voice, too, changes and Ran’s heart sinks. “I’m right here, Artist… Now let me kill you properly…” Marzena’s voice spills from Kiaran’s mouth.
“Aaron!! Back up now!!” Ran quickly breaks Ki-Zena’s grip and backs up. “Marzena’s using Kiaran’s body to fight!!”
Aaron quickly flies down. “I’m here.” Aaron draws several throwing knives from his belt and sets up in an offensive stance.
Ki-Zena chuckles as she clambers to her feet. “Oh, Aaron! It’s so good to see you again! Too bad I have to kill you.”
“Not a chance, Zena…” Aaron replies. “I think I can handle you…”
Ran looks at Aaron. “Are… Are you sure?”
Marzena holds out Ki’s arm and a large shadow scythe materializes out of the darkness. “Yes, Aaron. Are you sure? Because tonight’s the new moon and your power is weak… Whereas Kiaran’s is strong!!”
Aaron smiles. “I’m sure I can still beat you. Because I’ve got a little friend who’s just dying to meet you.”
