I recently watched the HBO miniseries The Pacific, and I've been really interested in learning the true stories of the courageous men that took part in the Pacific Campaign in World War 2. My favorite character is Eugene Sledge. Also known as Sledgehammer by his comrades, he is a war hero that wrote a story about his experiences in the war. His book With The Old Breed, has me interested in reading about his story even more.

Eugene suffered from major PTSD like all other veterans, and didn't write about his story until 35 years after the war.

He earned a PhD in biology and studied birds while teaching at the University of Montevallo in Alabama, outside of his hometown in Mobile Alabama.

He died in 2001.
