Description
"Did you see what he did to my baby? He needs to be expelled immediately!""Oh, the kid who was defending himself needs to be expelled, yet the ones who STARTED the fight should get off scott-free?!"
12 year old Darry Loomis had been listening to the adults argue from outside the principal's office. And even through the thick walls, he could hear his parents, Billy and Nancy, defending him.
He had messed up. He had finally given in and fought. He couldn't take it anymore. He couldn't take the hateful words they called him, or his family. Or the pain that their fists had caused. He had snapped and messed them up pretty good.
They sat in different rooms, so none of the boys would be speaking to each other now.
"Darry has never had a problem like this before. He said he could handle it-"
"Hold on, what do you mean 'He could handle it'? This has happened before?!"
Darry could practically hear the fury in his father's voice, and he winced at his increasing volume. His father had never yelled at him like that. It was sort of weird to hear it happen.
"No, not exactly like this, but the boys have been picking on Darry for a while-"
"And you haven't done anything to stop it?!"
His mother now, was furious. Darry could guess that she would be yelling within a minute. It was rare she did it to him, but when you got her really mad, you could hear her from miles away.
"Well, no... It never seemed like a problem. It was usually just name calling-"
"You should have looked more into it Goddamnit! And now you're only giving a damn when someone got hurt! You should have at the very least, contacted us!"
"Ma'am, please calm down, there is no need for profanity-"
"Yeah! You're the parents! Why didn't you see the signs? Oh well. You can't really expect a couple of crazies to raise a brat correctly!"
Darry froze. There was a deafining silence. You could hear a pin drop. The poor boy was afraid to breathe.
"....What did you just say?"
Poison dripped off of the mother's words, as though a warning. He could tell she was about ready to pounce, until the principal interrupted.
"That is enough. Now I'm going to ask this once. Mrs. Jacobs, how far has this 'picking on Darry' gone on?"
"Well, it started when I saw James punching Darry's shoulder. I told him to stop, and he did... So I thought."
Darry's eyes were huge, and his jaw dropped. She hadn't seen the hell he had been going through? Getting shoved in the hallways, punched in the back after class, smacked, hair pulled, pinched, and not to mention the name calling and being called worthless.
"It seems to me like we have a bully victim who fought back."
"Oh, you can't be serious, Richard-"
"Paul, I'm dead serious. Now that's not to say that Darry won't get punished, I believe that the boys need one of some kind as well. Bill, Nancy?"
"That seems fair."
Darry was barely listening now. He knew that they would be asking any minute for the boys. He could already feel his parent's disappointed stares. He could feel tears slide down his face at the very thought of it. He had always wanted to make his parents proud, though they loved him the way he was. He wanted to be someone... That got them their reputations back.
After a minute, the two boys, James and Howie were out of the their separate rooms, and brought out with Darry. A teacher that taught some f the older kids were watching them. James had tissues up his nose, and Howie had an ice pack to a shiner of a black eye. Both however, were rather smug. Darry had to hold himself back from beating the shit out of them again.
Finally, the door opened.
"Boys? You can come in now."
