They're both nerdy, ginger-haired movie villains who started off as normal people and wanting to become great heroes as well as impress someone they admired in some way (Buddy idolized Mr. Incredible and Hal had an obsessive crush on Roxanne Ritchi), until they turned to villainy after being rejected by them (Mr. Incredible not wanting Buddy to be his sidekick and Roxanne not wanting to date Hal) and now use their superhuman capabilities as well as laser-based weapons/powers to commit crime. Ironically, this can also be seen as a battle between opposites as Syndrome is an intelligent genius who uses highly advanced technology to kill superpowered heroes, whereas Tighten is a superpowered villain hell-bent on destroying Megamind, an intelligent genius who uses highly advanced technology.
