I catch myself in this situation sometimes, looks like you have the same habit as I do, never be afraid to use dark colors! If you think its dark enough, go darker, you would be surprised how a dark color can be an instant fix in some cases!

You could work an hour or two more on this study to fix stuff :> It's not that hard.

Structure is skewed, eyes and mouth are misaligned. He uses much more contrast. Turn the pic to black and white and check. Also you lost 3d shape cause light hits side of his head and it doesn't on your pic.
