Description This is the center panel of a 5 panel painting I'm working on. The other 4 panels are symbolic keys.

I'm looking for tips on the chain and lock and how to shade them and maximize a gritty realistic affect.

Very nice piece and interresting idea... I love the using of pastel colors... I usually don't like very colorful pictures, but the colors really fits to this one, so I like it

Looks nice! I love how you have done the background. Hmm, as for the chains/lock...at the moment you only have a single tone/shade of grey going through them.

Maybe adding darker tones to some areas, and then some sharp areas of contrasting highlights to bring out the shine. Hope that makes sense lol. If all else fails, looking at heaps of photo references helps. Try these:
