Description
"Sir! Movement in the Breach! Class 3 kaiju codenamed “Hydrus" has emerged heading for Tokyo!"Marshal Herc Hansen sighed as he turned to face the sensor console. Jenkins, his new sensor op at the Hong Kong shatterdome, was notoriously excitable and it wore on the battle-weary marshal’s nerves.
"Just alert Tokyo base to suit up and intercept, as well as exercise caution with these damned new-"
"SIR! New contact 200 miles southeast of Tokyo! It’s… I think it’s a Class 7."
Hansen wanted to slap Jenkins upside the head. “What do you mean, you ‘think’? We haven’t ever even seen a Class 5 since the Breach reopened."
Jenkins took a moment to compose himself before answering. “Going by water displacement it LOOKS like Class 7, but I’m not getting any readings on toxicity. Instead it seems to be generating an awful amount of radiation…"
"Radiation? You mean to tell me this sucker of yours is nuclear? And where the hell did it come from?"
Jenkins shrugged helplessly “I haven’t a clue sir, one moment there was a patch of clear ocean, the next, bam, massive displacement from what could have been a deep fissure or something."
Hansen took a moment to process all this. A double event starring a kaiju with record-breaking tonnage, potentially capable of organic nuclear fission, that managed to evade the PPDC’s normally infallible detection network, and popped up from a possible secondary Breach.
Things were going from zero to hell in seconds.
"So where is this new behemoth headed?" Hansen asked, sounding nonchalant in the face of a serious gamechange.
"Um…"
"Um what, Jenkins? Spit it out."
"Marshal, it’s on an intercept course with Hydrus, the Class 3 headed for Tokyo. At its current speed it’ll meet up with it in two minutes."
"… Jenkins, contact Tokyo Squad and tell them to move their asses. I want eyes on that thing as soon as humanly possible."
"Understood, sir." Jenkins paused, getting a hail on his headset, and began speaking very excitedly in Japanese before turning back to Hansen.
"Marshal, we’ve got a Japanese Defense Force frigate in the area and has visual on the kaiju. Patching it in now."
What appeared on the monitors was enough to stun every one of the well-seasoned operators in the LOCCENT. The Class 3 kaiju, Hydrus, lay squirming and helpless in the arms of a mountain of rubbery gray-green scales. The frigate’s camera operator was straining to get all of the Class 7 in the shot, but it was mostly dominated by the thing’s massive back, fringed with vaguely star-shaped bone plates running down its spine.
Suddenly the plates flared with a turquoise-white light that suddenly enveloped the screen, and just like that the Class 3 kaiju was a charred corpse, lit with whitish blue fire. Hansen stole a glance at the energy readings, and was staggered by the atomic output the Class 7 had… breathed?
With one arm the giant kaiju - was that redundant?- hurled the still-smoking corpse of the Class 3 clean over the frigate. The camera operator tracked the arc, but snapped the camera back on the giant as it threw back its head and roared. It was a massive bellow that shook the ship and even rattled loose objects in the LOCCENT, a roar of ancient, primal fury that had long slept and was deeply angry at having its authority challenged by usurpers.
Marshal Hansen had to sit down as the visual link was cut. A truly massive kaiju of record-breaking tonnage, powered by incredible nuclear energy it could easily weaponize, bigger than anything that had ever crawled out of the Breach…
… and it was on their side.

Comic Book Guy(C) types might dispute Big G's category designation with respect to hambeasts like 'Slattern' (a.k.a. Mr. Tanks-a-Nuke), but screw 'em; the tone this short sets for his entry to the fray is near spot-on in my book. Although the Marshal might be a touch hasty with that closing observation-given his mercurial portrayals in recent years, Godzilla seems likely to stay 'on our side' up 'till the moment (a) he gets a slight hankerin' for atomic take-out or (b) some panicking dope takes a shot, at which point all bets are well & truly off.
