Description
In the future, the well-to-do and the military-involved will have the option of trading in parts of their body for electronic enhancements and cyborg upgrades. The limbs, the sensory organs, the epidermis and certain internal organs can all be replaced or enhanced. What started as a program to let the blind see and the disabled move turned into a government-controlled entitlement system, and eventually, into an experimental super soldier system. Soon after, another technological arms race will begin.

The eyes can be completely replaced or fitted externally with enhancements. Multiple vision types, along with magnified zoom and superior motion detection, allow a soldier to absorb every detail of what he sees. The external ears are removed, and in their place are small microphones capable of detecting the smallest sounds, including the sound waves used for echolocation. The taste buds can be modified to alter a person's likes and dislikes in food, and the gag reflex can be smothered. The brain's perception of pain can be altered so that it is no longer debilitating, and the olfactory organs can examine lingering scents with precise efficiency with the aid of a partly-computerized brain.

The brain can be given all the strengths of a computer: massive memory storage, rapid processing power, and the ability to focus despite repetition. Sleep cycles can be altered and halved, so that four hours of sleep will completely rest and replenish the soldier. Overall speed and strength increase.

And yet, with all this, there are people who condemn the cyborg race. People of all religions and all walks of life despise the thought of giving up their humanity for the cold, metallic feel of perfection.
