TROLLZ-R-US
...Floor Lino Embossing Folder Impressions...
Internet trolling is a vile and hurtful practice that can result in genuine hurt and even suicide. The intention of this artwork is point out, however, that anyone can be a troll and that they are part of our community whether we like it or not. The thing is that although some trolls are just bullies that are enjoying the anonymity, these people are not actually evil. They are sitting at home with deep feelings of insecurity, often seeking any attention, even if it is negative.
I know this because although I’ve never intended to, I imagine that my behaviour on platforms like Facebook could be interpreted as trolling even if I never intended it to. I learned there that not everyone likes having their opinions questioned... and that very verbal and lengthy texts which are intended as enthusiastic responses to posts can easily be misinterpreted as personal attacks. I’m now much more wary about how I respond on people’s profiles; in fact I hardly ever respond to people anymore in fear of them thinking I’m attacking them.
Bullies of any type are disgusting to me. They ruined my life and if an internet troll found me then they’d undoubtedly go and ruin my life again. But trolls are us; each and every one of us has an “inner troll” [or an inner bob as my friend Zoltan calls it) just waiting to pounce, be it intentionally or not.
Here you can see examples of impressions of the original floor lino embossing folder. They are impressions which I used shiny fluorescent acrylic paint on. I dampened some of the folders and pressed it after inking up one of the sides of the folder (in this case the original engraving that was cut into the floor lino). The large image and the smaller lower one to the right which shows the troll on the right side show examples that were created from inking up the engraving. There are two sides to an embossing folder: the original engraving cut out of the floor lino, and the mould that pushes up out where the other was cut away. The smaller one at the top, however, where the troll is on the left side, was created after the initial pressing by running a soft roller over the uninked paper while it is still in the folder. Comparable to the rubbing of a gravestone, this means that the paint doesn’t stick to the parts of the image that have been pressed inwards.
