Sonic = because he's fast.
Knuckles = because he can beat you up.
Tails = can fly, and has a birth deffect w/ 2 TAILS. It's in the name.

You know that got me wondering too....Amy thought Shadow- a black hedgehog with reverse spikes, stripes leading from the face, a tuft of fur on the chest and jet shoes, was Sonic, and tails thought an evil robot was sonic as well.
