Poor Weejay, that face says it all. Very nice touch with the little claw marks on the table and I love all the details of the lab, everything fits very well! And I spotted the Alchemy Engine in the background <3

Definitely makes sense! It would also make sense as to why he could make them so easily in the wilderness, either still has the info that Maxwell gave him inside his head or Maxwell makes everything in the world ideal for his inventions. The creators did a pretty good job with all of the recipes I think, but I still like that extra bit of logic for all that can be created out of so little X3
And your story would explain the Shadow Manipulator really well in my point of view. Once he gets that evil looking arm of his it might come with more fiendish invention ideas.
