It's over.

Right at the edge of the bluff is a craggy, full portion of reef. His ice limbs crackle against hard coral. They’ve only come so far by the skin of their teeth. Icebergs can only float, never hope to dive.

Cherry places her palms flat against ice and freezes herself to the surface. It will be a bumpy ride, and though they'll place last, they'll see this race out as Ice types against all odds.

When the oxygen of her scuba gear fills her lungs, she almost spits her mouthpiece out in shock. Water whisks her hair with the current. The splash behind them is fierce, blocking her competitor just behind the rock barge. Cherry is firm against her kin. She smirks back at the wild look in Amber’s eyes. She’s stuck.

Their window of time beneath the water gets shorter by the second. Cherry sees the goal just ahead, just past the last colony of coral. She leans her body to one side and he tilts with a continental grace, arm outstretched for momentum. They just squeeze through.

He swims up and they barrel toward the finish line. Together.

NEVER in my entire life did I think I'd commit to a piece this involved! I have a habit of telling myself I'm "not ready" to submit art to compete for things, or should wait until my art style "matures" before making my concepts into peices. So I wanted to finish this piece to challenge that, and see what I could accomplish where I am right now.

I'm really proud of myself for seeing this through! All we've got is the present. And now I know I can see my ideas into full pieces, which is the coolest feeling.

I watched the movie Chasing Coral to study coral forms, and learned a lot of important facts about our endangered reefs. Highly recommend!
