Description
~4~Late that night Michael dreamt he was somewhere else, it was hot, it was stifling, and the smell was grotesque. He opened his eyes to trees that were swirling, and stars that were blood red…No, that was wrong, everything was red. There was a fire, everywhere, the trees were burning, no dripping, melting, bleeding. An old man cackled in the distance, or was it a scream…the earth shook as a voice rumbled from underneath…
Eat, the voice in the dream spoke.
Shed your earthly ways and eat.
Drink of me and be gone, go back to them and forget…

The next morning brought hell for Micheal, the drinks, hitting his head, they all contributed to a splitting headache and an upset stomach. The sun had risin by the time he got to his feet. Jon was already up poking at the remains of last nights fire, there were still many hot coals under the ash. Jesse was still in his tent and Rosemary was cooking on the propane stove. Michael through himself down on his camping chair, next to Jon.
“eggghh.” Michael held his head, his brow creased.
“Haha, yeah, that was some night.” Jon said over his orangejuice.
“yeah, some night…” Michael frowned again and tried to remember the dream that had woken him up in a cold sweat, but he couldn’t.
“hey babe, your finally up? Hows your head?” Rosemary leaned in and kissed his skull.
“Well I think it would be ok if I hadn’t drank to much.”
“and whos fault is that?” she asked with a smile.
“Nobody’s fault but mine,” he grinned and stared into her eyes.
Jesse unzipped the tent behind them, looked around while stretching and yawning. He tried to step out of the tent and tripped, falling on his side with a loud “ooooof.”
“Ahahah!” John and Michael laughed’
“awwe, are you alright Jess?” She glared at them both and they stopped laughing.
“Yeah I am fine” he got up and brushed himself off, grinning embarressedly.
“No one laughed at you when you fell and hit your head!” she frowned at Michael.
“Oh my god, shut up, there is a big difference.” Michael laughed.
“Hey Rose its cool, believe me.” Jesse said, smiling at Michael. She rolled her eyes.
“Whatever guys, lets go to the the cliffs!” Jesse said.
“Sounds good, we all up for it?” Michael looked around and they all shook their heads.
They were to go across the bridge and up little ways along an old gravel road that twists and turns, snaking its way up the mountain, and across to mountains on the other side. The cliffs are only about four miles up a trail that cuts off from the road.
They left the campsite in hurry, taking bottled water and some trailmix. They stopped for a moment at a sandy bar that the trail opens up to along the riverside. They all looked up at the giant bluffs that towered above the river, like some age old fortification, they stood tall, through millions of years of weathering. After skipping a few rocks across the river into the bluffs, they continued up the trail. Michaels pace was quick and peppy and soon everyone was trailing behind him.
“Hey Michael! Are we racing or what?” Rosemary said panting, her hand pressing down on her knee as she stepped up a rock jutting out of the earth.
“If you want to!” he said grinning at her.
“Fine!” she ran up to were he was standing.
“On your mark…”
“Hey guys it might not be good to run on this trail, uhhh.” Jesse looked at the ridge they were standing on, it’s a long fall to the river.
“Get set…”
“Well I mean, don’t listen to me or anything.” he rolled his eyes.
“GO!” Jon yelled and Rosemary and Michael took off leaving Jon and Jesse, and disappeared around the corner. Jon shrugged , looking at Jesse. They started walking up the trail together and almost got around the corner, when the silence was pierced by a loud shriek.
“fuck…” They both ran up the trail after the sound. When they got around the corner they both stepped back a bit.
“Holy shit!”
The first thing Jon saw was Michael holding Rosemary, she was sobbing into his chest. The second thing he noticed was the blood, a lot of it, and the remains of what looked like a deer strewn about the trail for a couple of yards.
“Damn, what did this?” Michael shrugged and Rosemary wiped her eyes on his shirt.
“ I don’t know, mountain lion maybe?” Jesse suggested.
“Ive never seen one do this…” he shook his head at the entrails entangled in some brush to his left. “ripped it to pieces”
“Im sorry for screaming you guys, you probably thought I’d fallen off the mountain” she half laughed, shaking her head.
“Yeah,” Jon chuckled, “I really did.”
“Well if you don’t mind, I’m going to head back.”
“Alright babe, Ill come back with you.” Michael looked towards the other two. “You guys can go ahead and hike up”
“are you going to be alright Rose?” Jesse asked.
“Yeah I’m fine, I just don’t feel like hiking right now, yall go ahead.” she looked down sickly.
“ok, see you guys later.” They walked up and after a few minutes Michael and her were both alone with the scattered prey. Rosemary walked down with Michael, not saying much.
That night Michael got out his guitar, as did jesse. They both reveled in their fused music and Jon and Rosemary listened intently. Rosemary went to bed early, but everyone else stayed up late into the morning.
Rosemary didn’t sleep well, her dreams were scattered with visions of blood and gore, and entrails lying on the ground…
