That's silly. Underground it doesn't matter at all. In fact I usually go into the mines at night for that very reason.

Hostile Mobs (Overworld) need a light level of 7 or less to spawn, and at the beginning of each world they only spawn in caves. Then at night they spawn outside, so it's safer to mine at night

yup, that's exactly what I was saying... in the caves the danger's the same anyway, so you might as well go in there when you can't safely work above ground. So "don't mine at night" is rather silly advice; it's the best time to mine.
