Quick question. How did you make the sheath for your unnamed katana? The one with the white handle wrap.

JonsProjects In reply to Polgaro [2009-04-22 08:07:38 +0000 UTC]
It's made from two pieces of pine.
One thick piece has the groove hollowed out, and the second thin piece is simply glued on top.

The video was epic awesome XD
was it making the light saber sounds? cause I thought I heard it but it was faint

JonsProjects In reply to Toshi-Riku [2009-04-16 13:05:22 +0000 UTC]
Thanks
It doesn't make any sounds, I did contemplate getting a small speaking and making it make a high pitched buzzing sound to simulate the vibrations of the blade but decided against it.

Hey Chioky, it's going very well thanks. I'm currently working on the the bit at the bottom of the handle.
I'll submit a deviation showing it's current state during the week.

Hey hey hey, As I was trying to make my Benihime, I came to a spot that was a little tricky, HOW did you make the curved part of the trim, you know, the little U shaped thing of the trim...I've been trying to make just that part for the past two days and I haven't been able to get it right. Got any tips?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
JonsProjects In reply to Hippobob [2009-01-07 11:14:52 +0000 UTC]
I made the curve by cutting two identical "U" shaped pieces of basswood and sitting them one on top of the other. Then filled the imperfections and sanded it down.

hi, the benihime you made is really awesome! i was wondering if the detailed design on its guard and bottom hilt is somehing pasted on top of the wood or is it due to carving?
and what part does craft foam play?
And also you seem to mainly use plywood, does it make better swords (or is i esasier to use) than normal softwood?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
JonsProjects In reply to afroze100 [2008-10-21 07:58:25 +0000 UTC]
The detail on the guard is balsa wood, glued on top, and then a few coats of watered down wood glue (so it would soak into the wood better) to make it stronger.
The craft foam was used at the bottom of the hilt for the wrap around detail.
I used plywood for this as it's all I could find at the time with the correct thickness. It's harder to work with and stronger than softwood.
I'd probably advised against using plywood and use a soft pine instead.

i see ^^
hmm, i'm trying to make ichimaru's sword right now, but i couldn't find pine so i'm working with cedar ^^
oh and by watered down wood glue you mean diluted wood glue?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
JonsProjects In reply to afroze100 [2008-10-22 21:29:23 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, diluted wood glue. Soaks into the balsa wood, then when it dries gives strength to the balsa.

Thanks a lot mate, it means a lot.
I've got some DIY to do in my "workshop" before I begin on my next project, sawdust gets everywhere.
My next project is going to be most elaborate yet, but it'll probably be a few months.

"patience brings out the best in your work"
And I believe you have followed that golden concept perfectly ^^
