What project are you working on that involves rigging?

Blender now includes a 'full' armature set (human) - so I'm going to 'create' a humanoid and then rig it.

ha - no... lol I'd be willing to send you the Blend after I'm done animating it...

Sounds good. I'll take the blend when your done. Thank you. I'm sure you'll do good on it.
Have you thought of rigging a pre-existing figure? Like one of the Blender movie characters. I think Frankie or Big Buck Bunny would be a good starting point.

I've got my humanoid rigged - and the rigging all 'seems' to work... so I just have to animate it next, and give it 'clothes' or something... not sure how I want to do it's 'face' yet,

Yeah, I've played a lot with 2.48/9 clothify settings - so, I think I can make it work

I played with cloth a little bit in 2.49 and was impressed by what it could do. Do you have more than one computer you use?

not currently - I've a ton of parts though - I just need a Motherboard/CPU/Memory to put a desktop together - but no money for those right now.

Do you use a Wacom Tablet for your computer? If so, does it work with Ubuntu?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SiathLinux In reply to Second-Perfection [2010-12-13 19:27:51 +0000 UTC]
I don't have one - though I'd love to get one - I've been told that not only does it work - but it works REALLY well with Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu and all Debian based Linux distributions since the user can open a console and 'apt-get install wacom'

Cool. The tablets are fun to play with. It's almost like drawing with paper and pencil, but you have way more options.
Other than the tablet, I don't really have too many other hardware concerns with Ubuntu.
A couple of days ago, I bought a Beginning Ubuntu book and have been reading through it. Lots of good material and i've been learning alot.
Thanks for your help and advice!

I've seen that book... never picked it up though...
Debian really stepped up a few years back (when Ubuntu began), in order to be able to install on most any computer (and a few cellphones to boot).
Only real issue seems to be with sound for most people, I think I had to go and apt-get some stuff to get my sound when I first installed (due to my crappy hardware).

I got Ubuntu installed and running. Haven't noticed any issues right now. The next step is get it to access the web and get Blender installed.
Ubuntu was actually easy to install once I burned an ISO to a CD.

What sort of internet are you using where your at? You could get a cheap router if it's cable internet...

I have cable internet here at home. I also have a wireless router. Right now, i'm trying to figure out how to get Ubuntu to detect that I have a wireless network.

Is this on a laptop? - if so - 'apt-get install wilan' -
If this is on a desktop - do you have a wifi pci card installed? - if so see above, if not...
If this is on a desktop without wifi pci card - you have two options - wire it or buy a wife pci card.

It's on a desktop. I already have the wifi card installed. It already works with Windows, but Ubuntu doesn't recognize it as being on.

Which wifi pci card do you have?
(I'll get as much information as possible in order to get your Ubuntu online).

Intel Corporation
and:
Wireless interface
RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe
RaLink

Install that on your Ubuntu - it's a 'fix' for that card.

yeah, it's a little funky - as I found that linking to the link in the forum failed - but if you are 'on' the forum the link works...
Anyway - forum page here:

Look for link in the first post by Muhommad Takdir - it's a few post down. If you get to this from your Windows computer - you'll just need save file - then put file on removable media and move it over to the Ubuntu computer.
Let me know if this fixes things for you.

F**K.
I downloaded the .deb file and tried to run/install it on Ubuntu, but an error message pops up:
Status: Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: dkms
I installed the Lucid Lynx version number 10.04 LTS. Will I need to install the latest version which I think is 10.10 or 10.14?
Thanks again.

SiathLinux In reply to Second-Perfection [2010-12-17 01:11:53 +0000 UTC]
yeah, 10.10 is the latest, it has a lot of patches that I've already installed, and they should be included with the latest ISO of Ubuntu.

Second-Perfection In reply to SiathLinux [2010-12-17 01:15:28 +0000 UTC]
Ok. I'll install 10.10 and see if that fixes the problem. I got it on DVD.

During set up - see if you can have it 'wired' to the net - this way it will automatically install/upgrade as it needs them (including the wifi).

Second-Perfection In reply to SiathLinux [2010-12-17 02:19:34 +0000 UTC]
Good news -- I'm getting 10.10 to install and it's updating. It's doing a partial update so it should be done in about an hour.
Might have lost my Windows partition though. We'll see after the update.

SiathLinux In reply to Second-Perfection [2010-12-17 05:13:33 +0000 UTC]
It shouldn't have taken your Windows partition away (as it should have just used the existing Linux partitions for it's install).
