i just came to say that i am amused that, despite the internet being full of europeans and americans, this week's "pick your favourite piece" on eliteliterature stars both you and i - both kiwis.

go go go new zealand!

pseudometry In reply to iPawed [2012-01-22 19:33:43 +0000 UTC]

Haha, what are the odds eh? Lovely piece, by the way.

thank you - as is yours, but then again, when we're competing for lit of the week, i doubt they'd pick anything less (;

tell me (as i'm always fond of meeting NZ deviants) - what sort of things do you get up to for fun?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pseudometry In reply to iPawed [2012-01-23 19:59:02 +0000 UTC]

Haha not a whole lot at the moment actually--we're expecting our first baby in a few months, so having to tighten the belt a bit. Mostly cheapish things like music, books, bbqs, bushwalks, the beach... hanging round with friends and so forth.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

iPawed In reply to pseudometry [2012-01-23 21:28:12 +0000 UTC]

that's exciting! do you know what gender the baby is yet?

i'm at university myself - or, well, transferring from canterbury to victoria (three guesses why!), and will be moving as soon as i'm officially accepted. it'll be nice to be in an area where i can get to the beach again myself, as for the holidays i'm living in the central north island with family.

pseudometry In reply to iPawed [2012-01-24 02:00:35 +0000 UTC]

No, we're going to keep it a surprise. Or at least, haven't caved in to curiosity just yet, anyway (as much as that frustrates friends and family who want to buy pink/blue baby clothing haha).

Yes I can guess--it's terrible and very unfair, those earthquakes. Very. I can't even begin to imagine what it must have been like.
What did you apply for at Victoria?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

iPawed In reply to pseudometry [2012-02-07 10:09:23 +0000 UTC]

i've always felt that the way you're doing this - not finding out the gender - is the way i'd like to do it too, when i eventually get around to that stage of my life. i also like frustrating friends and family

i've applied for education and psychology classes, mostly. i want to work with children in hospitals when i graduate, so though the career doesn't really have a set study path, those are the two important papers. what about yourself? study? work?

pseudometry In reply to iPawed [2012-02-07 21:25:51 +0000 UTC]

Haha. Yeah definitely.

That's interesting; I did a double-major in education and psychology, and ended up doing honours in education with a focus on educational psychology. I wanted to work for Group Special Eduction, but this requires a few years experience as a primary school teacher. I did my grad dip in primary teaching and completed the qualification, but found that primary teaching really wasn't for me. Now I work in something vaguely HR-ish, which is actually not too bad really.

in the last week i switched from a BA in Education to a BSc double major in Psyc and Educ. Huh. I'd forgotten about this comment, so it amused me to find it again.

pseudometry In reply to iPawed [2012-03-11 02:23:43 +0000 UTC]

I'd forgotten about it too. I think Psych and Ed got together quite well. You come out with something like the science of learning and motivation.

iPawed In reply to pseudometry [2012-03-11 02:26:42 +0000 UTC]

yeah, and a BSc (especially a double major) does sound a lot more.... refined, I guess, than a BA in Education. I'll be glad for that, I'm sure.
