I just wish Cedega would lower there cost, or WINE would just work for everything...
I really only have Windows to play my games (HL, Evo 4x4, Driver, old games-but I enjoy them still)

omg that was a nightmare... I'd like to think that we Linux users wouldn't allow such a thing... I could see MS going open source before open source joins them...

Schools in South America and Africa are getting the 8/9/10" laptops with various linux on them to use in teaching.
More and more business are moving to Linux as the economy dumps, cost cutting measures include dumping MS and almost all 'for profit' software. Open Office has truly helped with this move to Linux by business.

synaptic is the package manager not the dock i think the major repositiories for Linux are RPM's like Suse use Metacity Adept and Synaptic as for the Docks AWN CAIRO ROCKET and the E16 and E17..I had E17 on Geubuntu also another very nice release but it had no sounds also like the Lin X ...The new MacLin conversion to the upcoming Ubuntu 9:10 ..looks promising in karmic Koala ...but next year by Leaping Lynx it will be standard at present it still requires sudo apt get and several run commands to put it into the reposititory to build it and install it as a gtar zip to synaptic

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-10-15 04:22:44 +0000 UTC]
I know synaptic is the package manager, by the way, using Alien, I can install RPM packages as well, though I don't know the 'backend' on all of how it works, I know that it's seems to be flawless in its execution of installing new apps and only has a couple of issues on updates.
I saw that the repos for Karmic are becoming available, and that a new version of Open Artist will follow with that new version (so basically, any update for Ubuntu base will create a new update for Open Artist)

the small version is just under 690 mb ..like most of the distros, and fits on a CD, the full desktop is 1.3 gb so has to go on a DVD and with the checksums...I did a rough test and even with a fast pipe, its going to take me about 2 hrs and 20 mins to download that iso later and burn to DVD ...but what the heck...I'd like to try it

Open Artist was 3.7GB took overnight to d/l with DSL and I had to burn it 2x as the first time they shut the power to my laptop off in the middle and it caused it to fail to finish...

i tied the dreamlinux ..light weight XFCE mode but could not get network to config using auto dhcp pppoe or manual code in for gateway and .etc etc
So go figure ..and might try the elive ..as I had tried geubuntu a few yrs ack on ubuntu 8.10 base but it was too buggy...I have a multi hard drive tower ( swap drive unit ) and 1 more hard drive to populate...i'll either use the elive if they send me an .edu code or try the new 9.10's in the ub kub and xub's next week

I really suggest at least getting Open Artist Linux on a Live DVD - so you can see all that it has (especially since the new build is being released).

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-10-17 10:58:54 +0000 UTC]
Yes and my PC Linux i just described and the SuSe both use Gimp 2.6.7..which is why It is so surprising on the most recent stable Elive..as even though it uses Gimp 2.2 ..the o/s kernel is very modern 2.26.28 series which is certainly as new as current Linux Mint, Ubuntu and Kubuntu

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-10-17 17:34:39 +0000 UTC]
It does seem odd that such an updated internal (kernel) would have such an outdated build of GIMP as it's default....

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-10-17 19:36:47 +0000 UTC]

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-10-18 12:06:17 +0000 UTC]
Yes on my Laptop I dual boot Vista and Linux Mint and that is 2.6.7 and the kernel 2.28
I did install that Elive on my test machine last night on a cold swap 30 gb hard drive.
had to do it all the old way...qtparted set up reiserfs, freespace swap and an HDA2 and HDA 3 a pain ( or i've gotten lazy with Fedora and Ubuntu which do it all for you)...But the end result was quite nice..and Synaptic then updated me w about 300mb or perl and libs and took me up to 2.28 BUT the gimp is still 2.2.17 wierd
ps speaking on Ubuntu and Kubuntu "Shipit" just started taking free pre orders for copies of each to be shipped in about 2+ weeks ..in the nice sleeve with the graphics and Now they too are bosting the requirements ..must have 1gb ram processor min 1.2 ghz and 4+ gb hard drive space...I tried a beta a while back but they did not have the new graphics in yet and were running the older Adobe Flash ..and Gnash
Well so for what its worth..I have fun with it...But still do need an MS Win 32 environ for my Photoshops
Lastly Ubuntu will only be making 64 bit now for AMD architecture no more for Intel also

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-10-18 19:27:37 +0000 UTC]
That last part is due to Debian dropping support for the Intel 64. (I had heard such as a rumor a few years back, but never thought they'd actually do it...)
It's funny I actually format my drive, gpart it and all manually, with an old Fedora install disk, after which I drop in which ever OS I want to install.
The install for Open Artist comes in a 3.7GB DVD, and once installed takes around 12GB of space.

That is what i used today the Fedora install disk I did the Elive over 3 hrs ago and set up swap reiserfs and /hda 2 ( home ) and it went in even better and i must admit..maybe they still use gimp 2.2 but on no machine that I have does gimp load so fast as it does with Elive..its pretty catchy stuff ..but Iceweasel Firefox is still the 2.011 build ewww and the Adobe Flash nonfreeplugin is still the 9.038 which is like 2 yrs old so really other than eye candy or fast work in old Gimp..i can not imagine i'd want to do any secure web transactions from it like ebay or other on line shopping

Anything from Macromedia makes Linux users cringe.... Java seems smart enough to update itself, but Flash and such are such a pain.
I guess that I'm going to have to learn how to 'assemble' a build of Linux, I'll of course base it on Debian (as apt-get install rocks), this way I can build one with the latest repositories from Blender, and GIMP, and YafaRay, and OpenOffice, and Mozilla/Thunderbird/Chatzilla... I've got a lot to learn in order to do that, and I'll need a better system to run it.

yes the newest pclinuxos's have the latest flash as do the new ubuntu;s ..but a lot of the others mandriva and suse and slack 12 stil have that one before the 10.01.38 ..so some sites dont work right ..makes one gnash the teeth LOL

I don't understand web host that create sites that are difficult to view due to their use of the latest everything, knowing that many are at least a generation behind with their computers.

Its very nice latest distro of the KDE 3.5 seriers ans kernel up to 2.28.60 somehthing..When I installed it it called for 527 updates about 490 MB as it has a program upgrade in the eithers waiting to be installed once you put in the PC Linux 2009.2 which came out in June..I run the slock black gnome version on an old Dell GX 260 with 2gb ram and Pentium 4 2 ghz and it works fine except no 3D accelleration off that mobo ....But the KDE version on my ASUS has fill compiz box and wobbly windows and exploding flames and all the gadgets way cool
